Hi gang

First experience bending Coco. I use a bending iron. Since I laminate my sides, the Coco is fairly thin (1.8mm).

I would just like to know what you guys think about soaking it in hot water prior to bending. It is really necessary for Cocobolo? All the other rosewood that I have bent did not require it (Indian, Brazilian and Madagascar), but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Hi Pat - I would not soak coco instead just bend it like any other rosewood.

Just finished a coco, and just misted, no problems. There were several cracks in the sides however, following various grain lines, that opened slightly upon bending. Not sure if this is normal for coco or not. After the rim was complete, I kept flowing thin CA into the cracks (several sessions) until they were filled. They were "through" cracks, as I could see the CA wick through to the other side. They totally disappear after sanding, so if you get any of this, it's not an issue.

One of the easiest woods to bend. You don't even need to spritz it; the oils conduct the heat through the wood.

Yes, It seems to get hotter and stay hotter longer than other woods. It will bend easily once it reaches temerature and may crack if you push it before that. Let it get super hot and use even pressure as you go around and it bends easily and holds its shape very well. Spritzing is fine as everyone else said. I find it easier especially with Coco to have either tin foil or a bending slat on top of it as you go.
