i know that we've had "alternative neck woods" conversations before, but i don't recall how many people used alder. looking through a back issue of fine woodworking, it suggests alder to be an often over looked and stable hardwood. it's all over the place in the electric guitar world. any reason it wouldn't work in the acoustic world?

if alder is a good idea, and your canadian, any suggestions about suppliers? the one here in winnipeg wants a fortune for what is supposed to be an affordable wood.

I did an alder neck on a crossover nylon string guitar. It was a little soft but it's holding up fine. I would carbon reinforce it for steel strings. There are several types of alder and the density could vary a lot.

I raised this question a while back after reading that same FWW article. If you search the archives, you should find that thread.

I will probably try alder for necks at some point, but it will be a while before I get around to it. Carvin uses it for electrics.

Alder is a pretty common wood used in guitar building.I don't see any problem useing it for a neck. It's simular to maple anyway. It is a good tonewood.
