 Post subject: how deep is a scratch

I was talking to the guy who designed the "stockroom" sander & he said a 60 grit sanding scratch is .020 deep; 100 grit. .010 ...
Well those 2 grits add up to almost 1/32 right there. Do you think that is accurate? It makes me consider hand planing on expensive wood bindings?
