I wondered if anyone here would ever stumble on this. It was a 2nd year Ryerson university (in Toronto) film project, done by the son of one of my current students as his major assignment. It was his idea to do the documentary on me, and I graciously accepted. The whole thing was shot in one day (and it took all day too), with a black and white 16mm camera, the kind with small reels of film that only shoot about 3 minutes worth of footage - then you have to reload it. I figured he would show up with a video recorder and roll the whole day - but no, this was done the old fashioned way. Each 20-30 second shot was set up, checked for lighting and angles, and then rolled film. Changing film takes a few minutes, and I think Tyler took 5 reels, figuring that 15 minutes would boil down to five good ones !!! I tried to do as many things that day as I could, to give some interesting footage - you see me installing a shell rosette, cleaning up the top, tapping a bit, jointing/shooting a back, gluing it up on the wedge jig, removing finish to glue a neck, gluing the neck and cleaning up squeeze out, restringing, playing - a busy day. The voice over was done separately a few days before, kind of like an interview, then added to the film footage. The girl who did the sound recording, actually composed and played the background music - nicely done !!!

The film was entered in the Mississauga film festival this summer, one of four documentaries, and shown on the big screen, but alas, did not take first prize.

Fantastic documentary! Aside from his obvious passion for the craft, I thought it featured honesty, humility and professionalism. Tony's expertise shines through and gives a potential buyer a sense of confidence in buying a Karol guitar. We know Tony...and that film IS Tony even though done by someone else. Kudos to the film makers!

One of my pet peeves is the over-the-top blatant and tacky commercialism that I have seen in some builders who are trying to outshine the likes of Esteban in their marketing approach... especially when obviously not ready for prime time. This film establishes respect for the craft and the dignity of the builder. The fact that someone else, and not Tony, posted this is a statement in itself.

I remember those saturdays. Holding boom mics and doing lights. Somehow I convinced myself it was a blast

I really enjoyed it. It was very artisian. Reminded me of one I watched on Jean Larrivee once. I bet it was fun to be a part of it! The quality is fantastic!
