Yes dudes,

she be finished.

Slapped on some 7 or 8 coasts of oil, dried a few weeks and buffed and ever so slightly distressed...you know so she looks like she been on the road for a while.

Me thinks me has a winner here...so me gonna redesign this particular Travel Guitar...simplify it so as to be able to reproduce it faster and easier. Yes is true. Me may just go into limiter production run...well maybe.

Wow Padma!
The finish really tied the whole thing up nicely!
I am impressed.
Beautiful from every angle.
Congrats!
Make another one.
A bigger one would be a trip!

Its done! I love the angled top, I was thinking about something like that the other day. How do you like it? Maybe not as good for hard strumming, but for note picking maybe an upgrade. I love the colors of the woods too. Jason

Positively lovely, all the way down to the strap [clap]

So how's she sound? Are we gonna get to hear some tidbits?

Truss rod cover looks nice, all shiny and screw-less. Rare earth magnets, I assume?

Production run sounds like a good idea to me. Whittle out a few more of these babies until you're tired of looking at 'em, then go do something else. Not sure how you're gonna simplify it much without losing some of the organic beauty of the angles and curves though... but I guess that is only this one's shape, and to do it really proper they would all wind up a bit different anyway. Boy would that be confusing if you get like 5 of them going at once.

Best of luck, and thank you for sharing your work with us!

Thanks very much for sharing this build.
That is really something, [clap] it's got to sound good too.
I like everything about it, the ethic, the woods , the shape, just the whole thing.
It would be really kind if you could round off the story with a sound clip?
Please? Pretty please?

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

Padma -

That turned out nicely. I really like the domed sides. I'm looking forward to hearing the test drive.

I like it Padma. Post a pick with the instrument strapped on you so we get a sense of scale. Oil finishes sure look nice on wood.

Thanks for sharing this build with us. Looks like a fun guitar to play. Did you try a number of bridges as you have showed on your other builds? It almost looks as if it is a softwood. What are the simplifications that you are thinking for the "production" version.

Looks like a long FB extension, but I ran my truss rod channels through the fb extension and adjust with the long end of the allen wrench. One less part with the truss rod cover, and perhaps leaves a bit of strength for the headstock, which could be valuable on a travel guitar.

I would love to see this guitar travel through Mount Shasta so I can hear and see it in person.
Thanks Padma,
Rob

Well Rob

everything from flat plywood top and back, to hemmie carved tops and backs. Will keep the twist and do thinner sides for easier bending, unkurfed linings and dedicated bending jigs.

Me hearing what you say about the reverse truss rod.

Now me remember what the bridge was made from. The wood came from a tree up the lake. The stuff is harder and about as dense as hard maple, not only that it fluoresces a yellow green colour under UV or black light.
Unfortunately ... nobody has been able to tell me what it is.

Hey Padma....
You could have had the top carved in the same time spent on this post replies. ;-)
If she (brown eyes) doesn't want it....ship it my way and so Ill have something to play while I'm building my house. I'll be in my travel trailer (no room for a big ole geetar) all summer living on site during the week and only at home in the shop on weekends.

Looks like a fun build.

Kent

Just went over all the pages of the thread....wow....
Looks like real lutherie to me. I'm sure it took a lot of time and effort. Definitely a labour of love and a very unique instrument.
Me likes it! [:Y:] Would love to play it.

Keep up the building and what not! [:Y:]

To expect convention from the unconventional would have the Padma holding a Telecaster copy he made....which would disappoint.

That is an interesting instrument.

Now get a haircut, sir.

A Tele! Oh my! Me ain't made a hard body since 1965. Banish the thought.

Thank you Zlurgh, yes it is an interesting instrument.

Now regarding getting a haircut... pfft In the last 6 years me have lost me mom, brother, sister, aunt and a few cousins, as such me now the patriarch in the family...so um no more shaving head or cutting of the hairs. Gotta keep up the family rituals and traditions for the grand kids ya know.

Blessings
duh Padma
