My 1st build. I don't know any better, so I started by doing everything I wanted a guitar to be. I can only improve.............right?

Wait till Colin sees that! A classical bordered with abalone purfling.
Never seen it done...but (predictably) I like it.

Say...isn't it nice to see Bruce Dickey's name pop up on the screen again?

Steve

Yes ..

This guitar was for a friend. He asked me to build it with abalone binding .. solid peghead (he doesn't like classical ones) .. fishman "on-board" .. ;) and curved fingerboard .. he is very happy with the results.

regards!

Here is my current build. It's a red spruce/ african mahogany 12 fret L-00 with a slotted headstock. It is the second guitar I've built and it is also my second sunburst, I previously did a burst on an F style mandolin.

At first I didn't notice this was a revived thread. Laughed my head off at the top. Anyway... great looking new stuff on display. I should have a couple finished pretty soon. Will post a pic or two when all is said and done.

Hey, Logan, would you mind sharing your process for getting that sunburst? I love the look of it!

I used alcohol soluble aniline dyes from lmii, I mixed up a little bit of each colour in mason jars with an ethanol rubbing alcohol that I get from the local pharmacy. I also had one jar of straight alcohol with no colour. I made little pads so that I could rub it on, one for each colour and lots of extras. I also have a cheap air brush and compressor set up, I use the air brush for even application more than blending the colours.

I'll try to explain my process the best I can. In hopes to avoid any blotches I first applied a thin coat of shellac and then sanded back to the wood. It seems to have helped. I first applied yellow all over the top by hand, then some red on the outside edge then blended that in towards the centre, then amber on the outside edge and did the same. I didn't want the dark colours to be blotchy so I sprayed the brown on to the outside edge and I would then start with yellow with a pad in the centre and work my way out to blend the colours together. I would add more red or amber as required then blend them together starting in the centre with yellow or plain alcohol. I did spray some black on the very outside edge and then rubbed it in by hand being careful not to drag it towards the centre.

I hope this helps. Its hard to explain, you will get a feel for it. I suggest you try it on a top that is either scrap or not sanded down to final thickness. This burst ended up much darker than I had in mind but I like the look of it and so does my customer.

ok, I'll bite. I guess I'm a lurker, since I haven't posted here much. Though I have learned a lot, so thanks to everyone. bliss
lots of pics, I hope you don't mind. After all, you asked for them. laughing6-hehe
anyway, this was acoustic number 1:

and the back:

a pic of number 2, before closing the box. The same as number one, but with a cutaway. This time in EIR instead of padauk:

number 3: a baritone, 29 inch scale. Walnut body.a pic before the bridge was glued on:

then there was a Torres FE19 I built in the class I'm taking. I don't have pictures of that one, even though it's finished, and it is by far the best guitar I've made to date. :s Many thanks to my teachers Karel Dedain and Walter Verreydt. Check out their website if you like! They build amazing guitars!
Currently working on an Enrique garcia classical, and a Fleta classical, This is the headstock design I settled on for the Fleta:

Courtesy to Stijn Kenens, who came up with the design, but with some modifications in dimensions.
some 'under construction pics' of the Garcia: (sorry, phone pics)
today I attached the neck, and installed the sides:

A couple of weeks ago I started working on a 12-string Santa Cruz, including the flying butress bracing (that will be a challenge!), and in between stuff I'm also working on a telecaster.
I have way more on my plate than I can chew! :)
cheers!
