I'm going to finish it and give him the choice. I'll show him the pictures and let him decide after he's played it. Might even let him keep it for a couple of weeks to decide, or even play it while I build another one if he is bothered by the repaired area. I put the purfling and binding on the top last night. I think it's going to be fine. I haven't planed it out yet, but I'll post a picture later.

That sounds like a great solution, Waddy. I think it is a good idea to put it in his hands to play.

Here's where it is at present. You can see the graft, but I'm hoping I can blend it in filling with dark sawdust and shellac.
And here is the top with the wider purfling scheme. Really matches the rosette just fine. Had to widen by hand since no bit would go that wide. Still need to plane it out.

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

I think the patch will blend in with finishing. A wide purfling pattern is not uncommon in a classical. I think it looks great.

Waddy the graft looks good but is that a gap between the binding and the white purfling line or an optical illusion?

The side purfling is BWB, so it's most likely where the purfling is sticking out beyond the binding since it's wider.

If I didn't know it was a graft, I would think it was just normal variation in the wood. It looks fantastic and I doubt anyone would ever notice unless you told them. Great job!

You guys are all too nice! I appreciate the kudos. One solution is that I ordered one of the Luthier Tools self aligning binding jigs, which uses a spiral down cut bit. The shearing action of the down cut bit should limit situations like this one. I hope! Using the bearings has been frustrating to me. Nothing is ever the right size. Constantly having to tape up a bearing or put tape on the sides to make it fit. The bearings also limit what you can do on top purfling. If you need to cut a shelf with more than a total of 4.5 mm you are out of luck. Back to hand cutting. Not so bad, as that's what I had to do on this one. However, sometimes I like to have a little wide purf scheme on the top. The Luthier Tool jig gives you a potential horizontal depth of cut of about 9 mm(3/8") if you happen to need that.

No one is going to notice that me thinks. I really liek that binding/purfling scheme too.

Waddy, great job! I bet after a while if you get a chance to see the guitar again, even you will have a hard time picking it out.
Let us know how you like the new binding jig. Binding is the most stressful thing on the guitar for me.

Thanks, everyone. I don't think it will be a knock out issue now. I don't object to wide purflings either. The problem is cutting the ledges for them. I was lucky to have a piece that was close enough to work. When I cut bindings off of sides, I always cut from the edge I like least.
