Could someone tell me what, specifically, is wrong with the search function? I don't mean that sarcastically. I hear people complain about it a fair bit, but personally don't have any problems navigating.

I found the OLF some 7-8 years ago while searching online for guitar building resources. I think one of the biggest keys to using the search function is having been around for so long. I don't always post, but I visit pretty much everyday, and have visited almost everyday during my membership here. When I want to find something, I generally remember the thread it was in and have a pretty good idea of what key words to use. You can search by key word, forum member name and even search your own search. What more do you need? I'm asking honestly.

I don't have any problem with the multiple posts on same subjects. Like others have said, if it seems uninteresting to me, I don't read it. Simple as that. I've seen quite a few of the pros leave over various reasons, much to our collective detriment, IMHO. The more of those guys we can keep around, the better. That being said, this is a community and I love the OLF for that very reason.

 Funny enough to answer this question for myself I was looking for a search help page instead I found the global search icon at the top of the active section of the forum as opposed to the search for box at the bottom of each forum page. The search function actually is pretty good and could do everything you say.

Maybe we can put this thread in a separate category as the topic is beginning to look/feel like it's been posted before?

Sorry to have bothered you folks. I guess it was just me that did not appreciate the search function.

I use the search when I am looking for answers and can usually find what I am looking for but sometimes the results can be a bit wonky or bring up a wide variety of unrelated info that needs to be searched through. But if you use the correct parameters and refine your query it can work fine.

I think a lot of people expect it to work like Google so they just type in a question. That will usually give pretty bad results.
Someone suggested a Search Tutorial under the Code of Conduct thread which may be a good idea.
Possibly a video or picture tutorial would be better for the A.D.D members? idunno

Nope... He was banned along with Todd for being disobedient.

I guess Padma just got banned but Todd got banished with no traces left... kind of like being put in Witness Protection Program. laughing6-hehe

Both very knowledgeable luthiers. But were untamed and not trainable to be out in public...

Let me ponder a question , Lance , How hard / effective / would it be to have another small window by the topic Thread name that a person could enter a Key word .

IE: New thread ( I have a question about band saw blades ) Keyword : ( TPI )

the search would then look for Keywords instead of every possible word i could type in search that might be in that whole thread
Maybe a dumb idea , and only as effective as the person putting in keyword . Just a Thunk ?

I'm sure I can't be the only one to do this, but it makes searching far easier... Just type in the keywords of the topic want and click on the 'search within: topic titles only' button. It cuts the results by 10x and usually brings up the things you need.

Absolutely nothing... That is usually what happens when threads have run their course. It drifts off topic and people wander off into realms unknown.

That is until someone asks what it has to do with the topic by reminding people the topic is off topic and tries to bring it back on topic... laughing6-hehe

NOTE: THAT LAST STATEMENT WAS HUMOR AND SHOULD NOT BE TAKEN SERIOUS. It seems we need a new "Humor Warning" smiley so some understand when when something should be taken lightly. As serious as some people have gotten on this forum lately it may be needed... gaah

No you can get half way decent searches if you use all the functions to narrow down your search. I think most people are so use to Google that they just type in a question like you would on the big G and expect the same kind of results.

With a little effort like you say, you can get better results than just typing in a question.
