The other day at the farmers market I sampled some artisan goat cheese. I don't have a sophisticated palate, so I couln't tell of the cheese maker or the goat was the artisan. When I got home I saw a commercial for a chain restaurant selling sandwiches on artisan bread. That's when I decided the term artisan has given up its meaning to the buzzword gods; a real paradigm shift if you will.

Yeah, "Artisan" is now a word of Epic proportion.
<groan>

What exactly are the "Proportions" of epic ? :D

So big that it has to exist out of the box.

I like to think of myself as an artisan profligate.

When I was young, I was an artisan delinquent.

Perhaps the term "artisan luthier" was coined to distinguish them from those who go by the term "hack luthier". oops_sign

Is there a rule I have missed that says every thread must be of profound significance in reguards luthery ? If we take a moment to look through the list of threads there is a significant amount of excellent suggestions , ideas , direction and advice . The bounty is endless . I guess I fail to grasp the disdane that is apparently flowing toward the simple fun of a frivilous moment now and again .

A good smile at the end of a tedious day is never a waste of time to me !

Based on what i have read at most lutherie forums i have to assume that a real luthier never laughs. They don't have fun or smile. They simply stand around stoically, building guitars. Luthiers and humor appear to be like oil and water. Just my observation.

No. I don't think luthiers like candy regardless of how satisfying it might be.

Yeah, cuz they're usually so poor that the goat will become dinner.

All real luthiers are broke, brooding pessimists, which is what happens after decades of the type of hand-to-mouth existence forced upon them by the market economics of the craft. As well we know, when every single operation has the potential for either partial or complete disaster - a fact which becomes clear to builders harboring the wildly inaccurate notion that there is no way that their #2 could possibly present as many challenges as their first - it's hard to really, really believe that just this once, the jug of milk in the fridge will stay drinkable through it's expiration date.

I think you've hit on something that I've experienced, and still do.
I'm terrified of making necks. I've let a few guitar bodies sit around for years because I know that if I make a neck, I'm quite competent at screwing it up. I wrecked probably half as many necks as I had success with early on, and I don't seem to be able to get past that in my head.

Those "market economics of the craft" seem like they're not going to get any better, especially with all the Lacey Act stuff. Or perhaps that's just the pessimist in me!

First time post. Have been following the site for only a few months, but it proves there are real treasures on the internet. Recently retired and have decided to do something that has appealed to me for a long time. While I'm definitely an amateur (working on two builds of the same classical guitar - two in case of a fatal flaw), one thing I know for certain:

After seeing what a number of you have done - there are definitely "artisan luthiers" among you; many more than I originally envisioned.

This site is a joy.

Aww c'mon Tony ... they probably order Sour Drops by the gross.

Filippo

True. Anything bitter as well.

I trust most people can catch the fact that I'm joking. Filippo isn't though. He hates everyone. Especially me. He hates me with the white hot intensity of 1000 suns. But he loves a good Snickers bar! I prefer Kit Kats which is what lead to the 1000 suns worth of hatred. Which sucks because it melts both of our chocolate treats. Darn you white hot intensity of 1000 suns!! Darn you straight to heck!

If I "cut the cheese" while I'm working on a guitar doesn't that make me an artisan?

With great power comes great responsibility.
Or, in my case, with great stupidity, comes massive irresponsibility and suddenly you have quotes like this appearing:
