That's right Filippo, and most of us keep our opinions to ourselves when there's zero value in posting them. In person it's easier to do.

I guess I just don't get why some folks feel it is their job to humiliate or denigrate other people on the open forum.

Your comment ignores the fact that Padma has made himself into a caricature...which naturally invites extra-cival reactions. The key to judging Phillipo is to observe how he treats everyone else on this board other than Padma. Personally, I doubt those that make themselves into caricatures are looking for common responses from other people. Specifically, Padma has made many comments that were a clear attempt to tweak established convention...which he knows will offend yet he does it anyway.

Your comments suggest that we all should have a "normal" reaction to someone who chooses to exist outside of "normal". I'm curious why Padma does this but I accept it as his choice. I don't accept an expectation that we should ignore Padma's decidely iconoclastic expressions that verge on anti-social at times, and instead treat him normally.

Still...I like Padma...as an intent clown.
I respect Padma...as a builder.

A person that goes out of his way to be iconoclastic is one thing. There are reasons people create images of themselves that are completely innocuous. But an iconoclast that purposefully tweaks convention is an entirely different thing and the axiom "you reap what you sow" will apply to Padma whether you like it or not.

Joking is fine Bro T. As I said before, writing from a distance, people will say things that they would not say face to face. I like a good joke as well as the next guy but not in the form posted by Filippo. Funny to some maybe, not to me. Stuart has some good points. Take it as it is.

Peoples is funny, me learned this bit of B.S. behavior very early in dis life.

"if you think like me, you must be my friend,
if you don't think like me, your my enemy"

Again Zlurgh, thank you. Thank you for rising far above that kinda insecure crap.

Threre's only three strings on that bass.

You forgot a whole string?

I retract my respect and advise you to get into rehab.

Whatever "dude". Every forum has its self designated smart a**. And the groupies that follow him/her. I'm quite aware of it. This thread should never have been started in this sub-forum. New folks who do not know the politics and personalities here can be put off by all this crap. Has nothing to do with building beautiful, and unique guitars.

No cussing, and be nice. Right? If your opinion is about guitars, we all want to hear. If your opinion is about a member, keep it to yourself or use PM. If your opinion is about any supplier, take it offline or to a sub-forum that is web crawler disabled (we have one). Maybe they are not a sponsor today, but maybe some day they will be.

Bite me? I say far more outrageous things face-to-face...charm is all about personal contact and force of personality. Give a military pilot a bar, an open tab, and a cooperative, hopefully unmarried female audience, then sit back and watch the magic.

Come to think of it, you may be right...I have been bitten more than once... ;)

But moving on...I think we all need dramatically lit B&W photos with cheeks sucked in to show our super serious nature. Retouched for blemishes and excessive signs of age, of course. No reason to look worse than we have to.

And really serious ties.

And maybe Volvos, although a Saab will do in a pinch, as long as it's not a convertible and no newer than 2004 or so.

I can identify. Back in my light heavyweight days, I had a few audiences of my own. I try not to clutch and cling at the past but it can be tough sometimes. Having said that, I'm about as far from a shrinking violet as it gets, especially face to face and hey, in my younger years, I had an old 244 I used to drive around. Great car.

Maybe I was an OLF virgin once upon a time. Maybe I didn't notice these types of threads because of my infatuation with this place. However, in my reality something has changed - but it isn't a consistent problem. I have received a good amount positive input to my thread on "Getting more bottom end in my builds". But threads like this one make me shake my head and say "What's up?"

More and more I feel like the OLF is full of inside jokes that I just don't get. It feels like a club where I have been relegated to the "not cool" part of the room - and that the "cool folks" understand a language that is beyond me. It is like there is a core of people who are keeping tabs on everything that is said by everyone and waiting for ways to bring it up down the line.

It's as though there was a "fall-out" that I missed somewhere along the line - and people are still fighting out an old feud on any thread they can find a loose fit. The inside jokes tend to make people like me think the OLF has gotten a somewhat nasty and by God, you'd better watch what you say. I have no way of personally knowing the people involved and the tone of their comments as I don't have a lot of history with these people. So taken from reading comments without "history", I'm feeling confused and dazed.

I don't like what I'm seeing - I don't like how this is playing out. I've seen some good and very helpful people leave OLF because of this stuff and it pisses me off.

My immediate reaction is that I wished this place had moderators like AGF to stop this crap in its tracks and shut down the bantering when it takes a too a personal tone. And in my opinion it HAS taken too much of a personal tone (and not just on this thread alone).

FYI - I totally agreed with the OP comments! Amen brother!

Todd, good for you. Glad that works for u in person. Somehow, something is lost in the translation to web discourse. Yet, I was not referring to you. Seems you've made it about u when in reality it was not about u.

But the comment was exactly me and you're being uncharacteristically sensitive for a guy that chooses to talk like Cookie Monster. I was making light of the original issue....implying that if a luthier made a three string bass, having forgotten the fourth string, there might have been narcotics or alcohol involved in the building of the instrument. You know....humor?

I'd say lighten up but if you took that to heart you might float away. :)

Anyway....we are on the free internet and we are all unique and fallible human beings...especially Padma. To expect any free internet forum to retain perfect decorum without top down authority is idealistic. This is a GREAT forum....with real people here. If some people have left the forum because they don't like the way things are going then I wish them luck in finding what they are seeking...but I doubt they'll find it.

You are definitely off my Christmas card list. On the other hand, you have been added for all cocktail parties, porch gatherings, smokers, and similar debauches.
