Hey Todd, did ya'll forgot about the FB & bridge on that first one! :o Dang holes in the way.

Sorry, couldn't resist- how does that one work?

BTW, I really admire your work I've seen previously

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

Hey Colin,

It's my take on the Contreras "Double top." Which to me, was the first DT out there. First presented in 1974 the idea was to isolate the vibrational movement of the guitar from the players body by using 2 tops and a suspended back. The first looked like this-ish.
http://www.manuelcontreras.com/index2.html
Click the "models" tab. Then the 1st Class Classical Concert Tab. Then the 25th Anniversary and it'll scroll through a few pics of Manuel's fathers design. I've basically just enclosed the back plate and added sound holes for it to breath.

Yeah Haans,

Thats the back. Here's the front.
Image

I was stuck as I had closed the back up so tightly that the air chamber between the 1st and 2nd backs wouldn't allow for any vibrational movement. I was warned about the possibility that I was limiting the movement of the back but I refused to believe it until shame and the truth of it actually set in. I would tap the top and nothing would happen. Nothing!!!

So now there's 2 voiced pieces of spruce that move and compliment each other correctly. I may need a couple of more holes yet. My volume is still a little limited.

Just sportin' with ya Todd, I saw the dovetail...
Seems as though this is not going to be a "strap guitar". Definitely a sit down player. Maybe some side ports between the inside top and back?
Lovely looking high figure quilt sapele? Or is it "The Tree"?
Very innovative and beautiful looking work, Todd...
Please show us the finished product!

I knew you were giving the "what-for," Haans. Lol. And it's just the quilted Sapelld that Rockler had, it was all the rage 4-5 years ago-- when I started this guy.

Here is build #2 "the Butterfly" I am half wayish on the French Polish. Western Pa Sycamore I rescued from a burn pile a few years ago, the top is Adirondack with some great Butterfly Claw. The sound hole is a Monarch butterfly shape, a silhouette of a Monarch attaches with magnets

I dug out the waves with a dremel on a stand to control depth

my pricey sanding tool

Rock or Steel Maple for the neck, the back plate is 150 year old Wormy Chestnut
Image
I found Binding to be the toughest oops to deal with this time. I miscalculated the black line and had to recreate it with super glue mixed with Grit Laskins black powder ( that looks mysteriously like Copier toner!)
Image
I ended up sanding "the frame" Would it still be called a Rosette? I also replaced the antenna with Abalone
Image
The Bracing was copied from the GAL plans for a Gibson LOO, the body was a tracing of the Epiphone ELOOVS which has a 1" wider butt than the Gibson
Image
Scale is 24.75. Because of the weird shape to the sound hole I used a truss rod cover on the head.

Do you think I have a future career at the "Blueberry Guitars" factory?
