Todd, you can add my name to the list. I'll be car pooling along with Fred Tellier.

Unfortunately, I doubt I will make it this year. I lost most of my frequent flyer miles (thanks Delta) I was planning on using for the trip. I wanted to tour the Martin factory while in the area and with the flights available, the only way I could do this required 3 nights in a motel......so I guess I'll have to pass this year. Disappointing.

You can take Swingmandan off the list .... SwingmanDan = Dan Reese (Erie, Pa)

Looks like staying with family isn't going to pan out for me .... suggestions for nearby hotels ?

I started back to work today for at least 7 weeks unless the co. picks up some more work after this school is done. They are putting in all new AC air handlers and chillers. I'm going to check out the old air handlers for blowers and motors but I'm pretty sure they're all 277V.
You all have fun.

It is hard to imagine the astro-dynamic effect of this constellation of major stars. I fear that with this geographic imbalance of luthier karma, we bystanders will suffer inexplicable failures in "X" brace glue-down and our binding routs will tearout in spite of studied climb cuts and conservative depth of cut.

Among other things, I plan to avoid working on my foray into HHG-I fear it will gel, even in my 75*F/74*dewpoint shop downstairs. A few of the young lawyers I have mentored have referred to me as "Tobi-Wan" behind my back-I don't believe I will be able to aggregate the force sufficiently to combat the imbalance in the luthier world on that day.

On a serious note, the eclectic nature of this gathering guarantees that there will be talent upon which one could draw merely by mental osmosis(or, a Vulcan Mind-Meld). I want to attend but the last two critical lawyer projects of my professional career are two appeals due in our Supreme Court on the 11th and a week later. About the most I could offer to folks would be some handtool set-up and honing alternatives related to Todd's demos-and even that would be purely ancillary.

Finally, I do believe that a documentary "film" of this gathering is a must. Where is Ken Burns?

There's a couple of tuts on it in the tut section with one being a youtube. The first one I heard of doing it was Mario. If your joint is plained clean and you use HHG you can't see the joint either. So far I've found the joint prep is more important then what clamping method I use in 1/8" or thinner. The Scotch 233 green tape has enough pull to clamp the plates. I also like the fact that if you tape both sides you can stack a few of them up or lean them against the wall out of the way. Comes in handy if you have a small shop. But each to his own, more then one way to skin a cat and all that. Find what works for you.

"Taped joints are at least a few decades old, if not older...nothing new under the sun."
Though that may be but Mario as far as I know was the first one to bring it to the attention of the luthier forums (I'll have to check out the Big Red Books) and to use the Scotch 233 tape (a cool turn on also, I like that stuff). And just like John Cross as far as I know was the first to adapt the use of the long compass to make radius dishes in Lutherie.
And even my adaptation of John Farey's ellipsograph isn't new under the sun but is new to lutherie use as far as I know. Not to mention your use of SSII for bending sides which by the way gave me the idea of using it to soften binding to conform to a armrest and ribrest.
I'm just trying to give some credit to some for their contributions when I can that's all. I think that's a good thing.
I wish I could do your plate shooting demo, I still haven't gotten that down to my liking. I probably need to change my board and add the slope and get some scrap and just plane away to get practice.
Again, you all have fun and can't wait for the videos. :)

Just for the record I think Super Soft II goes back to sometime in 2006 when I stumbled upon the stuff and tried it for bending some WF Bubinga. Told JJ about it and he promoted it's use. Also been using masking tape to pull glue joints together for well over 20 years.

It looks like I will be able to make it. John, how far is it to the grizzly store from you time-wise? Is it reasonable to think I could grab a few things when they open (8:30?) and still make it to the meeting without missing too much?

Yes Grizzly is about 90 minutes from me , and that includes a stop at Dunkin Donuts. You can go straight down 180 , that turns into 147. follow 147 to you come to Herdon. from there you want to head to Pillow and berrysburg. Map Quest will take you way out rt 54. echh that is a breakneck road.
john
Looking forward to seeing you .

Sorry to say, but it looks as if we won't be able to come. I'm sorry to have to miss it.

Please remove Chris Wood from the list.

Chris.
