Of course you can be a traditionalist and also strive for excellence in craftsmanship. So they are not mutually exclusive.

My definition of a traditionalist is someone who makes them just like they used to.

Whereas my definition of a crafty guitar maker is one that emphasizes fancy artistic inlays of wood and shell and contrasting materials. Very tight visible joinery, flawless finishes and figured wood.
