Just to clarify, I want to emphatically state that the staining is not the result of abrasives - it is the fish glue. That brown discoloration is exactly what fish glue stained spruce looks like and end-grain is not required, only more susceptible. I can't offer an explanation beyond conjecture for why it stains sometimes and not at other times but I would only ever recommend this glue for use with dark hardwoods when the joints are visible or for internal construction. Of course, I am not demanding that others agree with me and the advice Hesh gave about abrasive staining is absolutely something to be cautious of.

There were likely two issues with what Rod posted pics of. Some of you offered the Fish staining idea which I concur with but I also see a glue line that looks contaminated.

Rod also gave a clue in his original post indicating that he joints with a level with abrasive paper on it.

I'm happy that we all were able to lend a hand.

Hesh, I see the issue primarily being caused by the fish glue - perhaps as you say there is some abrasive staining as well. No problem at all with not being in complete agreement on the topic and I've certainly been wrong before. Thanks for disagreeing "civilly"

My worst experience yet was using fish glue to attach bindings and filling gaps with CA. Dark lines and yellow grain streaking. Nothing but tite bond orig for me. Glad you had room to redo

I've used fish glue on three center joints (planed) with no problems. Guess I was lucky. I just bought some Titebond Extend; I think I'll use that next time.
