The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

I use a home made one out of a piece of 2" black iron pipe with a squashed barbecue starter stuffed in it. Got this idea off a well known builder in an article. Can't remember who. It works great. I plug it in to a router speed control to adjust the heat and use one of these hanging oven thermometer that I took out of the holder to check the temp. I just sit it on the pipe.

My first bending pipe was 2 " pipe with a propane torch set up to heat the inside. It worked pretty good although I now use an Ibex iron that has been modified with a higher wattage heating element. I have a fox type bender but don't use it.

I have answer about steel - t is very expensive ;(
one sheet 152x1000 mm thickness 0.3mm - price 74 quid ;( + 15 delivery - very expensive because I can buy in gemrnay
850x145x0.3 (1 pcs) for 35 quid + 14 quid delivery
Quite huge difference;(
About tonewood - may I ask you from where did you buy - abroad) and did you pay any customs?

I use Madinter in Spain mostly. Their shipping to the Uk is quite reasonable and they have almost as much stuff as Stewmac. Pretty good quality wood as well.
They're way cheaper than Touchstone tonewood.
