I wiped at a 45 degree angle to the grain (think grouting tile) and alternated directions with every coat. I applied as many coats as I could per session until the shellac started getting gummy. I cleaned the dust with compressed air after sanding. It probably took about a week.

I used to press hard to force it into the pores, doing the usual circles. Very wet pad. Looked a mess. After drying overnight I would wet sand and leave the powdery residue in the pores. After all it's just powdered shellac, no point wasting it. But it's many years since I was filling pores with shellac alone.
