Dosen't anyone do the sensible thing and use foam on the inside of the soundhole to stop dust getting in there? I know I don't.

Sheesh Joe! Please try to keep up with the rest of the class! We are making crude, double entendres now.

However, to answer your silly little, on topic question; no, I do not use anything to block the sound hole except when applying finish. It would be wise to block it at other times though.

Why would you be putting your junk in a guitar in the first place?

Joe,
A double entendre is when you say something that could mean something else. I can't find a clean meaning of your last post. In any case, I suppose I know where to put my foam now.

That is a classic example of the often used single entendre.

Subtlety is not my strong point. I meant to write SH and not s*** hole as I quess that could be, in the language of abbreviation, a double entendre.
Anyway, sorry if I offended anyone. I'll stay out of the banter now.
So back to topic, anyone have any more solutions to getting crap out of their SH?

Short of a laxitive, not really.
Joe, why leave now? It was my filthy mind that lead me to think there was no clean option to your post. Not once did the word "sound" come to mind. I thought you wanted me to shove some foam up my snot hole. That would definitely keep dust out of my nose while building. I don't always remember to put on my mask, so some semi-permanent foam plugs would get me a buit of relief from the congestion I endure after exposure to dust. I was actually thankful for the tip. I just didn't see how it was a double entendre because there was no second meaning. Now I see that you could have meant my rear end and that was the "clean" version. Sorry for the slowness. I don't sleep enough and sometimes that causes me to be less sharp than I would like.

Unless you have blocked the hole for the entire build, you will wind up with some saw dust or other junk in there. Someone on this forum once posted an idea to not cutout the sound hole until after they finished the guitar. I'm not sure if they had actually done it or not, but it is an option. Expecially if you use a simple hole cutter made from a stick and a razor blade. Otherwise, compressed air is the best option. I have not had any problems getting everything out using compressed air. But, if there is some stubborn junk, dump in some rice, shake it up, dump out the rice, and then blow air again.

Lets not turn this into a big debate about the type of rice you should use to clean the box. Those threads are always contentious. Usually worse than the "HHG vs Titebond" threads.

I would suggest a fully prepared steaming hot plate of gorganzola risotto with pistachios and rosemary. It's super sticky and will pick up everything. This is also a great time (if not the only time) to own a Chihuahua.

Well, I was going to suggest first coating the rice with Titebond, but I don't want to stir the pot.

But it does make me wonder - does anyone ever put rice in their dry HHG flakes to keep the moisture content down, like they do with salt shakers in the local BBQ place?

I'd be worried about the fine powder that accumulates in the bottom of the rice bags contaminating the shellac.

I don't the rice trick is necessary on a new guitar, though it works pretty well on old beaters full of cobwebs etc.

Rice has a tendency to get stuck in the kerfs.

I always wondered how to make "kerfed rice."
