I have found standard diagonal cutters like those an electrician use work well for cutting standard and stainless. Electricians linesman cutters work even better with stainless. Yes they don't cut flush and you have to do a little more work but it's not that big a deal...Mike

Be careful with using an abrasive disc to flush cut SS frets if it's installed... I charred the maple binding to hell when doing it that way.

Geeze, not to be mean or anything, but you deserved that one....

Yeah there is a so called luthier tools seller on ebay that sells these just for this reason. I laugh every time I run across his auctions and feel sorry for the suckers that got caught.

For the record I was trying to grind the frets flush with a grinding wheel, because at the time (with a very limited shop) I didn't have the tool to grind SS frets. The frets got so hot that it burned the wood it was on.

As I said, you deserved that one.... All you need is the same fine file you use with every other fretwire; they don't need to be attacked with a grinder.

I would think that you also changed the color of the SS and locally altered its temper...don't ask me how I know that....

I eventually changed it to nickel fret after not being satisfied with the job... worked better after that.
