use a jig to get the scarf joint and get a sharp block plane and clean it up. Shouldn't take long.

I made one of these jigs for my table saw. It cuts a perfectly perpendicular and smooth scarf ready for gluing.

I've been refining our table saw technique for our student guitars. 4 years ago we were doing this with pretty good results: http://www.malicky.com/davidm/scarf.joint.jpg
1/8" WW2 blade and slow steady feed. Since then, I've made a custom beefier clamp to hold the neck to the block and we're clamping the block to the miter gauge. And a better tablesaw. Now the surfaces and fit are clean and consistent right off the saw -- often no visible gaps, sometimes a ~1/64" gap on a corner. For our purposes, we just clamp it closed.

I use a jig and a freud glue line rip blade, really nice finish off the blade.

28in 9 point german bow saw clamped in vice ,the 3in blank gets sawn quickly , clean up with L/N block plane . Now I use a 15 deg angle jig on BS which decapitates the blank quickly, block plane cleanup.
