Ouch, where's my sunglasses!
Nice...

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

How does your finish hold up with body chemistry and rough handling, if you don't mind my asking?

Hi Beth,

So far the only thing I have noticed with the finish over time is that it has gone a little duller (over a 2 year period) but that is probably the Wax finish more than the Oil. I apply 2 coats of U-Beaut wax finish and that seems to be a good extra protection, it also polishes up well.

As far as wear and tear, one of my guitars was played by musician Mike McCarthy at the launch of his latest album and he attacked it a little harder than I expected and it looked like it had been in the wars, but with a little wax it has come up fine again. I have started recommending clear pickguards for those customers that will hit the guitar hard.

I started using Danish Oil as it was recommended by the Luthier that I learnt from (Chris Wynne from Thomas Lloyd Guitars) and he has over 30 years experience and has tried just about every finish on acoustics. He recommends the Rustins Danish Oil as being a great finish over time.

Hope that helps.

Finally finished! I always seem to like the latest build the most.

Beautiful guitar! [clap] What do you think of the stage pro anthem? Is it easy to install?

Thanks Peter. I was a little terrified to cut into the side but with the help of the good old Dremel it wasn't to bad. The install all went well and everything works. I put double sided tape (the thin type) on the template that came with the pickup and stuck it to the side. I used that as my guide and it was good. I am keen to play this through a sound system to get a good idea of how well it performs live.

I just installed the StagePro in my most recent build. The musician I built the guitar for loves that system. Baggs makes it pretty easy, but there is a sphincter factored in cutting that big hole in the side of a finished instrument!
Beautiful work, Martin. What's next?

Once I worked out which tool to use I was OK but yes I am sure there were very specific muscles that got a work out. I ended up using my dremel with a small grinder wheel to cut the main hole and then finished up with a little sanding bit and then the corners with another little bit.

All in all, not too bad but it certainly was worrying. Fortunately the Baggs template was exactly the right size so I just used double sided tape to position it and then started cutting. I will be giving the guitar a good workout tomorrow through a large PA so I'll have some feedback on how it all went.

As to what's next? I have another dreadnought to finish and my son still has to finish the guitar I started teaching him to build. At 19 the biggest challenge is getting hm out of bed before 2pm! Hopefully he'll get re-motivated and finish it.

Awesome guitar Martin. Your name must REALLY confuse your customers! And guitar enthusiasts all together.

How often do you hear that? And I think it was fait for you to build guitars ;)
