I hopped on sometime in the first year or so. Somehow it says 2007 for me but I think I re- registered then. I remember we all had our pictures and bios on a page. I don't think there were more than 20 or 30.

Congrats Lance on keeping the best forum going. I think it's as good as it's ever been right now. I log on every day.

Hey, whatever happened to Dickey?

I think it may have been Bruce (or Ron Wisdom) who suggested I send my bio and a pic to Lance to be put into the bio section. There was a certain charm about the OLF in those days. I did re-register so I'd have my real name. First got on in late '05.

I see that there is a swap-a-palooza forum up. What's the secret handshake?

. . . I have 6,500+ posts on this forum. A good half of them as a beginner and young builder years back. The OLF educated me as much as the luthiers I worked with an work I performed independently. I believe it is in the OLF's community interest to share information and raise the collective knowledge, in this sub-forum or any of our forums.

Filippo made this comment in another thread, and it struck me as a great reflection on the value of OLF to many of us as we've evolved in skill, relationship, and interest. It's definitely been a significant and remarkable resource for me.

I remember thinking "so this is where they went" when I discovered OLF in 2005... ;) I only knew about MIMF (and Mandolin Cafe) at the time, I seem to remember quite a few of the early members here had previously been quite active over at MIMF, but were either tired of the way things were run over there, the old fashioned software, etc. (There were lots of unfamiliar names too, of course). At any rate, for me the OLF was a welcome addition of info, and I really liked all the pictures, the swap meets, the generosity, the informal and friendly tone in general. For me, living so from just about anything or anybody significant related to this craft, I always try to absorb as much information from as many sources as possible, and this has been a major one. I do miss some of the 'characters', old timers and pros that don't come around much anymore, not so much some of the egos, nor the drama that would plague some of the discussions though...

So kudos to Lance for keeping this place going for all this time! I bet its been a ton of work and a rocky road at times, but you've done a wonderful job all along, so thanks! It doesn't get said enough [clap]

Congrats Lance and all!
All is well here in Boston, now it's settled a bit.
Here's to the next 10!

Great to see it's still going strong.

Here is the very first page posted back in 2003. Some of you OLD TIMERS will remember
the first version. (Lets talk guitar) OLF 1.0

BobC, Matt Gage and John Osthoff were among the first to join and post.

I wasn't there quite in the beginning, but close. If it wasn't for this site, I never would have continued after my first guitar. It was the help and advice in the early days of the OLF that kept me going. (Hesh, Michael Payne, Lance, Brock etc.) Yes I remember those bio's pages....Wow it would be interesting to read those again and see how we all have changed.

Thanks again Lance.

BTW who was the guy that used to post about 20 entries a day around 7-8 years ago. A beginning builder that was really into the OLF and then disappeared. Very likable guy.

Bruce Dickey? Yeah, I miss him being here. He was a good guy. Wish he'd come back. Most people won't remember it, but Bruce came up with the idea of a lining very similar to the G4, which bent in all four directions. This was many years before anyone else did it. It was a good idea then, and is still.

I was thinking the exact same thing. I ran across it when I was researching capped linings. Most people told him they were pointless.

Congratulations Lance, and thanks to all of you for your generous spirits and thoughtful replies. I've only been around for a few years, but finding the OLF was the best thing that's happened to me related to guitar building. What a goldmine!

My earliest memories of OLF were back in the early Spring of '05'. when I began my venture in lutherie. Back then I was just a lurker as far as forums go. Finally bit the bullet and signed up in the Spring of '09'. Congrats on a successful forum, Lance. And for bringing so many great folks from around the world together with a common passion.

Hows that saying go John, "size doesn't matter" LOL!
Yes I too remember when it was a much smaller club too. That being said, Some of the best people
I know have come as a result of this community and I personally could not be happier with the way we have grown over the years...
