Currently my fav tool is my lathe. understandably not the most necessary luthierin' tool but top of my list all the same.

Here are some shots making some 30's retro bridge pins (on my 30's lathe!)

Also allowed me to modify a set of Waverlies to embed (and make the buttons):

and then, of course, cover.

No lead, and the eraser is worn out.

That plane looks gorgeous! I might have to try and make something like that.

Don't make one! Buy one from Stephen, a member here. The blade is the most expensive part, and it's a doozy! Comes ready to use, and holds an edge forever. $45 each or 2 for $80. Has a flat bottom one and the one I pictured. http://studioboone.com. Click on the Guitars link then the hand made planes link. Since I bought mine, I have not touched my little IBEX finger plane. You can even modify the slope of the sides at the base, if you want, to accommodate your style of brace shaping. It does not groove your top when properly beveled.

I have a few of these and love em. I use them for carving braces mostly. I recommend!

I've been looking for a tiny plane for that purpose.

Just ordered one!

Thanks Waddy. I was looking for a curved one to go with my flat one a while ago and read that he wasn’t making them anymore. Sooooo back on the list. laughing6-hehe

My favorite tool lately is this little guy. I'm finding all kinds of things that i didn’t even know needed measuring since I started using it.

I was about to buy a set, but noticed Stephen is no longer making them. I made these instead and think I found another hobby... plane making bliss

Maybe he no longer sells them through luthier suppliers, but here's the link that says he no longer makes them

Well he just shipped a new pair to me, and he has an ad in the latest American Lutherie Mag., so I assume he's making them. I lost mine that I've had since he started making them. It'll probably turn up, but I can't live without a Boone on my bench.

It was my bandsaw, but there is no 220 in my current shop so that's out of commission.

My old tiny little maple workbench got destroyed on the trip to Alaska, along with a lot of other stuff. So I milled it and turned it into parts for a new workbench. Went to the local sawmill and came across some decent pieces of maple and honduran mahogany on the cheap (2.00 BF & 4.50 BF respectively) and turned it into the bench below. I set it up temporarily. Still needs some bells and whistles, clamps, bench dogs, etc. but it works for the time being.

That's my new OM pattern on top. I just built a nice tall mold for it and some turnbuckles are in the works so that I can get better results on my sides this go round.

Waddy,

You are making me blush.

I had considered not making them any more but quite a few people encouraged me to carry on so I got my second wind so to speak. I am still working hard and filling orders.

There are many nice looking tools featured here.

My current favorite might just be the Lie-Nielson #51 chute plane. Awesome.

No blusing allowed! By the way I found my original today. It was in the bottom of my Go-Bar tube. Don't know how it got there, but when I was gluing the back on #14 I had all the rods out and looked in the bottom and there it was. Last time I saw it I was shaving braces on the top. Probably knocked it off the bench into the tube when I had the go-bars by the bench for gluing braces. Still glad to be getting a couple more of them though.

Knowledge.
All the fine tools in the world would be useless without knowing what to do with them.

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

There seems to be a special fondness for small planes in this thread. Here’s a little shoulder plane that, among other things, is handy for smoothing the nut end of the head plate.
