It's not the formica back and sides that hurt the sound and short term durability of the instruments, it's the other elements that go into making a "cheap" guitar. The Richlite bridge is the first thing I would look at as a tone killer. The thicknessing and bracing of the top would be the next place I would look. The Stratabond neck and Richlite finger board, although not aesthetically great, probably work O.K..
I have built a number of HPL back and sided instruments, and although I would not call them "world beaters" they have sounded fine.
We don't put expensive materials and the time and care into an instrument made for a lower price point. Why would we compare it to a fine hand made guitar?

I have been watching the 1973 Martin D12 19,

I hope they don't bid stupid and the repairs are not more extensive. Looks like the back plates are seperating. I think the wood from a 40 year old guitar might be nice. I wonder what the reserve is?
Placed my bid Eat Drink

$1000, max. Those 70's Martin aren't anything to write home about. Considering the damage I wouldn't bid more than 500 dollars. I can tell you I'd charge at least 600 dollars to restore this because there's a good chance a neck reset is needed.
