While everyone is venting

In Ohio, a lot of people use "ideal" in place of "idea".

"Hey man, I have an ideal..."

My pet peeves:
Ware instead of wear (e.g. playware).
Guage instead of gauge.
Effect instead of affect. In most cases, effect is a noun and affect is a verb.
Momento instead of memento. Momento is not an English word.
"It's" for the possessive. "It's" is a contraction that means "it is". The possessive form is "its"....no apostrophe.
Before I was introduced to Internet forums, I had no idea so many of us were literally challenged. Most of this is sixth grade level grammar.

Yes, I know what you mean. Sometimes people just need to heal that kerfing habit.

Wow, so many responses, and very entertaining responses at that ...

So , reading between the lines, I gather that "heal" is NOT in fact currently an accepted synonym for "heel" .

Just wanted to make sure ...

I will play.

THEN and THAN. Two completely different words, not interchangeable without completely changing the meaning of the sentence. I see and hear this all the time. Folks are constantly using then when they should be using than.

There's instead of there are.

Allzz, pronounced like awls "allz you have to do ........"

Disinterested when they mean uninterested. Disinterested means impartial.

Personable for affable. Personable means attractive.

Peruse for skim when it means the opposite.

Mundane for ordinary or boring when pretty much everything that we do is mundane because it means earthly or of the earth.

It is endless.

L.

I frequent a gm forum. Breaks is acceptable. Unless you are talking about the things that stop your car.

I think there is a disconnect when it comes to typing. A lot of times I'll use a completely different work that sounds the same.

Like I typed out this on face book. "having to look to their life and right." Instead of "left and right."

Or maybe my brain is just went on a brake...

More and more I see people use "on" instead of "one". Is this some kind of "in" thing for people to do?

Perhaps you meant "hear" instead of "here" as in "I can't hear you from here."

This illustrates the point quite well. The spell checker won't pick up differences when the misspelled word is another legal word. The best spell checker dictionaries are not too large. English has a lot of words and many commonly misspelled words happen to be other words.

I try to ignore most of these if the intent of the author is clear. There are a few cases where the incorrect word is also a reasonable sentence that is proper in the context.

One thing that sort of bothers me is adverbs that have the "ly" missing. "He felt bad about the situation".
While we're ranting, It's hard to find a sentence with the word utilize where the word use wouldn't have been better.

What I think this thread illustrates most clearly is that it's not a good idea to criticize others' spelling or grammatical errors because we ALL make them. laughing6-hehe 8-)

I fear that many folks will be offended by this thread, as Todd has already demonstrated.
I think we will all need some heeling time from this one.
