No whay, meng.

I just snapped off a brass screw in a finished guitar body yesterday. Now....I KNOW she likes dumb guys...given her history but I DIDN'T snap it off on purpose in order to have a fighting chance. Really...I didn't.

I hope second place isn't Janeane Garofalo.

Knew it wouldnt last !! I just realized that when I used the Bridgematic to set my bridge I misread the instructions . The bridge was at 12 - 15/16" from twelfth Fret and the Nut is at 12-9/16" so Recon that 3/8" is probably a lil toooo mucccchhh compensation . [headinwall]

Well I now how to remove a bridge now , and I know that the glue was reeeeeeeaaaaallllll good the first time .

Wud ... if you are serious about joining the Doofus of the Month Hall of Fame (there is one - it's in Schenectady, NY), then I advise you start gluing ALL your guitars together with Polyurethane. This stuff will do the trick:

No doubt, you can beat this thing hands down. Just go for the gusto!

Well, it's still October, so here's mine.

Look at this and see if you notice anything weird:

Attachment:
DSCN0237 (Medium).JPG

It's an OM. When tracing out the shapes of BOTH the top and back, I used my standard OM template for the none-cutaway side, and my Classical (!!!) template for the cutaway side. I noticed it not only when the top and back were cut out, but when the rosette was inlayed and half the top braces were glued.

My templates are not identified, as I always was able to recognize them by shape (until today, obviously...). As I was drawing out the shapes on the top, I clearly remember I was saying to myself: "I really should identify these templates or eventually I won't use the right one." I'm not making this up.

Hey, if you tighten up the waist on the cutaway side, I think it makes a pretty cool asymmetric shape. Especially if you do fan fret. Check out Bruce Sexauer's stuff.

As for me, I'm off the hook for my previous post. It turned out my fingerboard extension did have just a little too much of a gap under it to radius before gluing down, so I decided to gamble it. Went with a 20" radius instead of my usual 16", and just barely got away with it. That 15th fret dot is really living life on the edge, but it looks fine.

I did, however, smack the headstock into a brick yesterday. But it only made a small scruff on the back edge, right next to one of the tuners where it won't be noticeable. I should really leave more soft things and less scratchy things around the shop during post-finish stage.

Yea.. I hope next month isn't how I managed to plane an Ebony fretboard into a wedge...

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

I humbly accept the award. Special thanks to my family who supported me troughout the tough times when I was not making many mistakes and didn't have much to submit to the academy of doofery. I can proudly say that I'm part of the boys now!

Hey What gives??? By my calendar, we've still got over 24 hours of October left.

And last night I went to bed with my forefinger and thumb fused together - amazing what a little CA in the wrong place can do. There was no way I was going to wake up my wife and ask her where she keeps her nail polish remover......
although she didn't even ask why when I asked her first thing this morning - she must be getting used to my ways.... duh

Anyway - I know what I'm going to have handy in my shop for the next accidental fusing...

Thankfully I can't really compete this month but I do have a good one. I went to blow something off with my air compressor and it was dead. No air and it wouldn't turn on. I had just rebuilt part of the regulator a couple months ago and had to grind out a frozen, corroded nipple so I immediately assumed I got some crud in the pressure switch. BUT.... excellent mechanic that I am, I caught myself. Of course you don't start taking the whole regulator/switch apart before checking the easy stuff. I went to the circuit panel but no breakers were tripped. I looked all around the regulator for an overload switch and found none. So I started taking it apart. The seal where it connects to the tank completely fell apart in the process but no other problems could be found.

I turned my attention to the motor and then saw the tripped overload switch! Duh.

So I made a new seal out of some neoprene, put it back together and it ran just fine. Re-attached the hose and PSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSST. My first thought was "What on earth did I do to put a hole in the hose just now?" Then I realized that the hose blew out in the night, the compressor ran continuously and tripped the overload.

I used to make a habit of turning off my compressor every night for just that reason. Someone once told me about a fire starting because of that scenario. Guess I'll start turing it off again. Glad to give up the prize and still have my shop.

Kent,
We give you second place! :D
I'd come in second,
because I like wearing corduroy pants,
but that's not luthier related,
that's just a doofus.

well since i got stuck on my build because of the back giving me some trouble. ill post it.

i first braced the back at an adecuate RH but maybe I didnt wait enough to let the back acomodate to it, so it was fine until the back went dead flat at about 40% RH.

here it was fine, for a while...
Image

so i decided to take braces off and let it dry some more. it was real low humidity those days, about 30 or 35%. I hanged the plate on a ventilated place for about 2 days but decided to go further and put the plate on the sunlight for about 10 minutes each side before glueing braces..

the next day whether become damper and I found the back swelling like crazy at about 60%. i think the sun exposure over shrinked the plate and it was now bending the braces very noticiably. it was too much. i cant imagine where it would go if RH was around 80%...
Image
Image

so braces off again.. this time I took the plate to my bedroom for 3 days and kept controling the humidity, at around 45% and 50%.
so here it is. i hope this one is the one
Image

i wish i had a little workshop... well someday maybe..
