For the past two years my dad has been saving his individual creamer containers (think restaurant size) for mixing epoxy...He does RC airplanes so he uses epoxy quite a bit. He has to have nearly 1000 of them, so he lets me raid his stash. They're great for mixing up small batches of epoxy for inlays mixed with a small popsicle stick.

2 lb coffee cans with bottoms cut out and taped together with foil duct tape for storing go-bars. Works for bindings too.

Used a couple of stainless steel pot scourers to centralise (and act as a heat sink for) a heating cartridge in a stainless tube used as a bending iron.
(And using a dimmer switch for the temperature control, but I'm sure that's been done before)

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

I use a cat food lid inserted in the end of the side bending pipe to hold heat in. Also the pipe rests on two gutter nails to keep it from burning the wooden base.


What else...old t-shirts cut up for glue wipe up rags, toothpicks to fill old screw holes when replacing tuners.
