Congrats on the fingers, Chris! (And anyone else who still has all 10.)

I hope I don't come across as critical. I do have a couple relatives that do not have all 10, and in both cases, they were doing what I saw in the video. (Except it wasn't a guitar neck.)

We're all big boys, and I hope I don't come across as talking down to anyone. I was taught that your fingers don't go over the jointer cutterhead unless you're using a pushblock. If someone has a better view, I'm always eager to listen and learn.

Appears I may win this sucker myself this month , " doofus move #2 "

APPARENTLY I glued the bridge plate in place based on a 14th fret mount instead of a 12th fret mount before I closed the box on the purple heart build and then proceeded to glue it all up .

Now that I have the neck in place and am ready to locate the bridge , the plate is 1-1/2" to close to the soundhole . [headinwall] [headinwall] [headinwall]

Blue tape shows location of bridge plate !

it is a 12th fret , necks on , board mounted , fretted, ready to make nut . I set bridge plate for 14th fret , instead of 12th fret like I should have

OK, this isn't technically a build. It's actually more of an autopsy. You all know more than I do so words aren't really necessary here.

WudWerkr - I see you like large bridge plates - what do you see as the advantages/drawbacks?
laughing6-hehe

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

What do you mean? Doesn't EVERYONE install their 1/4" MOP fret dots at the 4th, 6th, 8th, 11th, 13th, and 16th frets?

A big gaah from me. idunno

I have an entry! Not sure if it's a contender, but it was done on a completed and fully functional guitar.

I had it in my head that my old Ibanez bass would serve me better as a six string than as a five string. It uses mono bridges, and there was room for an extra, so it seemed like a simple enough thing to do. I was drilling for the extra tuner today, and noticed the hole was a bit small. Must be metric, but it seemed close enough to me. A few hammer taps, and....

CRACK!!!

Split the headstock along the laminate. Bonehead move, to be sure. But at least I have a submission for "Doofus of the Month" now.

:D

Well, something good came of that mistake. It's a beat up old bass anyway. A "natural relic" if you will. And since it cracked right along the laminate, it'll fix. Won't be ready to play at church Sunday morning though.

That is just a unique guitar.
Once you get used to it,
it will be fine.

We have a winner " TRUCKJOHN " For his winning ability to save $7.00 laughing6-hehe and become this months Doofus of the Month Winner

And a recap of his award winning post !

Quote:
Working on a 4-string tenor guitar... I am finally getting back around to finishing it up - it was part of MIMF's $100 Acoustic challenge last year. It's completely made of pallet wood except for the fretboard... which is literally the cheapest slotted fretboard that LMI sells.... It's some sort of dark, chippy wood......

Got my Peruvian walnut/maple binding glued on - and it's glued on wrong.. Somehow, the binding rode up a bit..... so I gotta pull it back off of one side.... The binding breaks in 4-places when un-sticking it.... Glue it back together.... 2 extra days...

Now, once the glue is all good and dried, I plane off the extra and start looking in the fret slots - which are like 25% filled with hardened Titebond.... So I start chipping it out - which has never been a problem before.. but it takes forever.... 2 extra days....

And while I am chipping it out, the fret slots start chipping out REAL bad! Remember the part about the cheapest board LMI sells... Apparently, there was more runout and swirl in it than usual.....

So.. I saved all the sanding dust from radiusing the board - and now I am filling in chips around the slots one at a time with CA and sawdust.... I can do like 2 in a day... so add another 8 days.... Then, gotta re-radius the whole thing again.... Another day

So I have like 16 days involved in a fretboard that would normally to make the same progress that would usually take me about 10-minutes.... but I saved like $7.00 on that fretboard a year ago....

Thanks
SPEECH SPEEECH SPEECH SPEECH !!!

I attribute this award to my longstanding philosophy "Cut Twice then Measure Once!" and "If at first you don't succeed... Keep doing the same thing over and over and over and over until it works right!" laughing6-hehe laughing6-hehe

I couldn't have done it without you guys!
