Well, I rummaged through a lot of old stuff yesterday, and I think I came across a few finds. I have some really cool antique pillow blocks that I believe are 1", a few pulleys, enough lumber to build the frame, a couple of random pieces that I have ideas for, and several old motors. Most of them didn't run properly, and one was downright scary, but I did come across an old motor in a big evaporative cooler that might do the job. It has a lot of corrosion, and no information plate, but it runs well. From what I've seen, most evaporative cooler motors run at about 1700 rpm, and range from 1/3hp to 1 hp. I think it's worth a try. I'll have to buy a belt, and I'll need something to use as a shaft. I've tried to research that. An old post here revealed that TG&P is the way to go, but I can't find anyplace nearby that sells it. Is there a big box alternative, or something I might find at an auto parts store or something? Cost is a factor.

As always, thanks for your help.

Ok. The drum sander is almost finished. The paint is drying on the lawn, and it's time to order sandpaper. This may be a ridiculous question, but I can't seem to figure it out. There are a number of sources for the paper (I'd be interested to learn of more, of course), but I can't figure out if the paper has the hook side or the loop side of the hook and loop (Velcro) fasteners on it. I'd assume it has the hook side, but I'm not sure, having never seen it before. Also, what can I use for the other side that will permanently (more or less) attach to the drum?

Thanks.
