These are the ones I grab for to mark wood. Some are hacked down to get in to those tiny rabbit holes.

Pencils? Oh well, yes. These are the ones I use:

B - HB - 4H and a 0.5mm HB (I don't like 0.7mm  ) on the right some ballpoint pen guts with my gramil attached to it (for dirty scribing of any parallel-to-the-edge line). On the top a cheap but well working sharpener, on the lower right a small piece of 320 grit sandpaper for sharpening the 0.5mm HB pencil:

This one didn't make it to the family photo. It's a HB for copying the outlines of guitars and guitar-like instruments to a sheet of paper:

Hi Mike. Circular? How so? Not sure I understood.

Filippo

My rye sense of humor showing. Circular as in referring (back) to this thread.

Mechanical lead holders having been my mainstay for decades (except for artists colored and pastel pencils), only recently have I returned to wood pencils for everyday writing and shop work, and only the new Triconderoga brand. I've favored tapered triangular cross-section handles for years, especially for needle files and narrow chisels. I just love these pencils.

For mechanicals, I use a Staedtler Mars Draft Technical in .5mm, and various .3mm pencils.

Staedtler Omnichrome whites are one of the greatest unknown pencils, they can write on just about any surface from glass and plastics to dark woods etc. and they can be painted over, rubbed off/out by a finger from many of those surfaces as well. A Staedtler white eraser removes the rest (ticket writers and signwriters use these pencils all the time ) Just get a darker one to use on lighter surfaces.

I have found that the silver Quilter's pencils are great for marking dark woods. Stands out and is easy to wipe off with a finger or with a damp rag, leaving no residue. The only bad thing is that they are soft, so loose their point quickly. Hand sharpeners seem to work best with them. A long point will break.

Interesting thread, guys!
I have to wonder.....how many years will it be before pencils, as we know them today, will only be collector's items.
I find it hard to imagine how a craftsman could function without pencils.
