I'll call you next time I'm in town Haans. I'd love to see it and play it.

Trust the wife!

Very nice job. I just started reading this thread, found the topic interesting, settled in wondering how this would turn out...Then BAM! There is the finsihed guitar! Usually these things go on and one. Man, you're fast.

That's my kind of woman!

Cool git, Haans. But you really have a lot to learn about procrastination.

Yo, dudes,

thanks for all the posting to this here thread by Haans regardin the scale lengths of travellers and small guitars.

After reading it me thing me gonna go take 5/8 out of the neck and add it to the body length in that travel guitar me about to be build. Ya gonna shorten it up to 23.5 Also gonna lenghten the tail piece to shorten the length between it and the bridge so as to stiffen up the compliance of the strings after hearing what you be saying about "soft strings"

And Hanns your build came out beautiful as usual. But then you aleady know that. So thanks for posting the pics for out eyeballs.

blessins yall

duh Padma

Thanks, Pads. Took it down to Charlie Hoffman's today and Charlie said it was the perfect "old man's guitar". That made me smile.
Howard, never have been good at that procrastination stuff, but I'll keep trying.

I've been toying with the idea of making a very short scale (22.875") jumbo guitar (16-16-1/2") as my left hand is getting pretty sore from an old injury while playing. Long A's are a particular problem and I am hoping a very short scale might help.
What can I expect from such a short scale? Rubbery strings unless I use heavier guage? Lower volume? Anyone have any experience with that short of a scale?

Haans,

I suggest communicating with Larry Pattis. http://www.larrypattis.com/ He has some hand problems and has worked at obtaining very short scale guitars that sound long scale. He can tell you what he learned and which luthiers made the various guitars for him.

Larry is an excellent steel string concert guitarist making his living with such.

Only one that counts Pads, but as far as guitars, we both have a bunch. Mandolins too.
Only problem is that I can only play one at this point.
Gots to make some more!
Howard's comment just reminded me of an old Dave Ray version of a Bill Broonzy tune.

I recently finished a very short scale nylon string guitar as a prototype for people with small hands or people with left hand problems. The design was built up from the scale of 21.88". This scale is based on the hand measurement system described in "The Healthy Guitar" by Alicia Kopfstein-Penk. The lower bout is 13 1/2" and body length is 17". The person testing it has small hands and pointy fingers so I could also make the fretboard narrow at 43mm at the nut and 53.5mm at the 12th fret. I have played it in standard tuning and in open G using Savarez Alliance high tension strings. There is plenty of volume, projection, bass and a nice sweet sound. I used BRW and 4A Engelmann. The hard part is finding a case as made the body a little deep at 4 1/2" and the tail end and 4" at the heel. The guitar also has a Florentine cutaway, armrest bevel and chest bevel.

George, Cedar Creek will make a custom case for you at under $200. They are going to build one for me. Check their website.

OK, here's a couple of quick clips of the Mini...

Great work as always Haans, sounds like you managed to capture a big box full of that bluesy mojo.

Well done [clap] [clap] [clap]

Thanks guys!
Fillipo, I think I had the mics too close and the gain too high on these clips. I don't think it has a reso quality to it. It's also really tight yet.
Afraid I have to back off on the playing again. My tennis elbow started in again yesterday. Better today, but it's going to take a very long time, and maybe more shots. gaah
I'm really tempted to go for the surgery, both on the elbow and fusing the joint in the thumb.

Howard, guess I'm just a Dave Ray/Bill Broonzy kinda guy.
Fillipo, left arm...even worse. Fifteen years of carving mandolin tops and backs didn't help and 20 + years of lifting 4X8 sheets of MDF, well...
