Wow, I've never seen chestnut in person. Would love to see good pics of the neck wood.

Chestnut is a very good idea. I suggest making a habit of tasting wood, in the privacy of your own studio. Oaks are acidic, etc. Chestnut tastes / smells somewhat sharp and musty. You can compare your sample to the underside of an antique table, etc. and learn as you go. By the way, Chestnut makes an excellent neck.

I have indeed tasted this wood, though not on purpose. Hard not to when the router's kicking up a lot of shavings, lol. Sharp and musty certainly describes it, now that I reflect back on it. I am satisfied to call this chestnut. Thanks, all.

One cross-check would be to compare your sample to some wormy Chestnut, which is a common secondary furniture wood after the blight killed the Chestnut forest between the teens and 30s, depending on how far from New York harbor. Subtract the bb-sized holes and you have the same wood. Wormy Chestnut can often be seen at specialty wood dealers. Sizable quantities are salvaged from old buildings for re-use as flooring, cabinetry and so forth. Enjoy your hunt.

Darryl, unfortunately my digital camera stinks. I am, however, planning to take some 35mm pics(yes, film)of the build in progress, hoping to get better quality. If I think of it before I shoot the finish on this guitar, I'll try to snap a few "in the white". But it will be a while. I build slow, for many reasons. Weather and cash flow, among other things, dictate that. So I don't expect to be finished with this guitar before summer 2011. But I hope to attempt binding the fretboard and glueing up the neck long before then. I'll try to get you some decent pics then, if you're still interested. But I bet there are folks in this very thread that have some good pictures of chestnut already. If so, maybe they'll oblige you.

Maybe I'm just suggesting the obvious, but why not drop in to a local cabinet maker in your area and ask them if they can identify. It's tough to i.d.from a picture.
There an awful lot of 'votes' for oak. That would be my guess. But a local 'wood guy' could help you best. i'm just saying.......

Thanks. I'm satisfied it's chestnut.
