Hello Jan,
Awesome work. You have an awful lot of patience!!! I like hand tools until it comes to sawing large pieces of wood. Hahaha. You have a great start, I am very interested to see this build through. I don't think I've ever seen anything like that before. Cool rose by the way.

I sure wish that we had some luthiery schools in the states. It sounds like this is actually an accredited school, which is awesome. We have schools, but none are accredited. And that means that I can't my military benefits at them.

Keep up the good work.

Nice work. At the age of 23 I didn't have a clue what a Baroque Guitar was.
Am I correct in saying that this is based on the Dias but set up as a 5 course?

I am also interested on how you learned that complex looking Rose. Looking forward to seeing the finished instrument.

I found some pictures of original roses on the internet and based my design on them. With CAD it is very simple.
In the end it isn't much more than the inside of a paper model of a weddingcake.
Here is a site where they make the rose for a harpsichord.

I dont have the patience that you do obviously . Ohh And BTW, IMHO if you ever stop building , you could be a photographer !

It has nothing to do with patience. I'm a very impatient person.
Funny you sat so about the photographing. About 5 years ago (when I dropped out of historyschool) I had to decide wherever I wanted to be a photographer or a luthier. I never regretted that decision.

Glad that you have chosen a Portuguese guitar. ;)

The guitar is based on the Voboam in the Shrine to Music Museum. I traced the outline, and scaled it down by 2/3.
The Dias is a 5 course guitar (although some people think it has been a vihuela - don't mention the war ;) )With a scale length about 55 cm.
A member of the Voboamfamily has made a doubleneck. The lower half of these has a 445mm scale length, and is 2/3 of the size of the upper half. You can see this as the lose lower half.

It is. In fact I have a guitar building diploma bliss
Very funny when you're searching for work. What can you do? Well, I have a diploma guitar building... :?

Wow. You obviously know a lot and were well educated. And your english is perfect Jan! I'm simply amazed. I'm going on 25 this year and wish I had started sooner. Your skills look honed already!
Two languages and a guitar building diploma. Makes me feel like I'm either lacking in motivation or they aren't teaching us enough in the states. Probably a bit of both. idunno

Definitely keep us updated! Oh, and interesting coffee cup pizza

Usually the Dutch youngsters are learning at least three languages at High School. Dutch, English and at choice; German or French and sometimes Spanish. Small country, small language it takes a lot of effort to make ourselves understandable in the world :P

They're not as honed as I wish. The more I learn about building, the more I know what I don't know about it. (Yes, in Dutch this would be a very normal sentence).

I'm not that educated as you might think. As Wim said, it's common in Holland to learn multiple languages. When it comes to learning languages I'm really on the back of the line. I quitted the foreign languages (french, german) as soon as I could, because I always had bad numbers. The languagecontroller saves my posts bliss .
At high-school I lacked interest in all learnings except for history, so I didn't do very much for them. Most of time I was listening to music, reading, or helping by excavations (archaeology is my old love) in the neighbouring town. After I dropped out of history school I had to choose something else. Because the only things that I liked where archaeology, photography and guitars, I chose the thing I loved most, regardless of what people thought about it or what would be the salary in the future. I haven't regret this at all, but there are still people who tell me I could have done better, go to university and have a -in their eyes- proper job.

Great to see you're back working on this one! Love seeing primarily hand tool builds like this, and the baroque style instrument is even more fitting to it. Can't wait to hear how it sounds :)

Made the sides to their height yesterday.

Image

Today I made small progress...

First a little repairjob that was around for a while. The soundboard of this little antroposophic lire came loose from the side (white woodglue), now glued with boneglue.

Image

Further sawn the ribs.
Two maple strips (leftovers at school), first scraped them clean and traced the mold.

Image

Image

And sawn...

Image

So there became eight unmatched ribs. (On most of the historical lutes and baroque guitars the ribs are unmatched.)

It has been a while since I worked on this guitar.

Last week I took a few days off at my work to continue working on this guitar. (In fact I took a break from building guitars to build a guitar... oops_sign I think I'm going slightly mad...)

Started Thursday by bending the ribs.
Image

And glued two ribs on the guitar that day.
Image

I shape the ribs using a jointerplane.
Image

Yesterday glued three ribs to the form.

And glued the outer ribs today.

More to come soon (hopefully)...
