Waddy! That coco guitar looks like it's coming along GREAT. We'll have to meet up again when I get back to Charlotte in the coming weeks and give it a peak over a beer or something!

Works for me, Chris. Let me know when you are in town.

Spent the weekend pretty pissed off that I screwed up both my classical necks. Just minor mistakes - but I know I won't be happy if I keep going. This will probably mean a 3 week delay for me, as I have all the other parts - I was just completing the headstocks when I realized they both had too many headstock mistakes to keep going.
So I will pick up some wood for 4 necks and begin building them this week.
Spent some time working on my headstock templates and I still can't get them perfect... argh! and real work is piling up so I won't have much time to think about this.... but I guess part of me is glad that I am rebuilding the necks from scratch - [headinwall]

I'm almost finished with the prototype of my new sound hole rosette cutting jig. I have to change out the pencil with a pencil grinder and figure out how I'm going to set it up for precission adjustments. Probably simular to the axis adjustment.

This might give you some idea as to some uses for it.

I actually discovered the idea when looking for ellispe templates for a sound port. The idea comes from John Farey around 1810 or so and HAFF's adaptation of it. And now my take on it for Lutherie. It's just a prototype to work some things out.

Mostly work around the house, hung new shutters, pressure washed the house, and trimmed trees.

Did find time to cut and radius braces for my size 0 and got the back braces glued on.

A little more work done on the L-OO:

Ready to glue the fingerboard...still waiting on my top wood before trimming the end of the neck.

The back of the neck is shaped and ready for final sanding.

Man, do I know that feeling! I screwed up two completed V-Joint necks I built for my second guitar, after hand fitting the V-joint. The third one was the charm! Then I was able to salvage another for my 4th guitar by making a shorter scale. Point being, don't despair. You'll get it right. Filippo's right though, make sure you can't recover one of the err'd necks.

John, what specifically happened to the necks? Can't be saved?

My headstocks are messed up. One, I did the error I told myself a million times "I am not going to do that" - I cut the slots before the holes for the tuners ! Tear out on the inside of the slots, and my hyoid, the curve that goes into the nut area... goes in too much then flares out for the nut, not very traditional. On my other it seems like my template must have slipped or I made some error in measuring - one side of the slot is more narrow that the other side of the headstock - on both the head plate is off center, and it is obvious because it is a bookmatched head plate. The heel and headblock came out perfect besides that.

I am headed now to pick up wood for 4 necks - I will spin this around and not only make better necks for my current guitars, but I will start on my next two !

Wow! Now we have to be mind readers! Filippo is leaving out the last half of sentences.

"only one problem with Waddy's guitar....."
"going to pick up your curly....."

I believe it's the responsibility of the poster to make himself clear!!!!! gaah beehive

Not much done this weekend really other than doing the bracing for the back but I spent a little time using my technical kerfing jig I made...

Image

For the cost of a solid cedar banding (£0.80 ~ $1.12) compared to the price of having it kerfed (£2.50 ~ $3.50) I would rather save that small amount of cash (£6.80 ~ $10) and spend 10 minutes sawing. I can do all 4 in one go but found doing 2 at a time quicker.

Moving slowly on my first build.

Heel and tail blocks are done. I didn't have a hunk of mahogany wide enough for the tail block so I joined two pieces. I put a maple key in it for no real reason. I'm breaking the "don't try anything weird on your first build" rule and made the heel block based on a picture in a Batson build thread on AGF.

Image

I bent the sides on a hot pipe and got them into the mold. I heard a crack while bending the bass side. It's with the grain in the waist. It took me 5 minutes to find it so I'm hoping a little CA or titebond will seal it up without issue.

Image

I practiced joining and gluing the center joint on some of the lesser pieces of my Hibdon luthier special stash from a few months ago. This piece has some cracks that run into the pattern and it's well off quarter. I was pleased with this practice attempt.

Image
(please ignore the hail damage on the jeep)

So I went to work on the back that I intend to use in the same fashion and I was chasing gaps up and down the joint. I got really upset- kicked off my shoe, stomped around (after retrieving the shoe), threw something, and drank a beer. I had to set the back aside and built a proper shooting board. I'll go back to trying to finish the joint after my blood pressure returns to normal...still a little hot about loosing some of the contrasting color on the center seam.

Image

I'm really jealous of the beautiful wood you guys build with. I just can't bring myself to spend too much money on materials for my first build. Unless I end up taking off another 1/2" getting the joint right, my first will have a belly button.

I like that belly button, it gives the guitar some real character. No factory would allow a flaw like that to escape.

Well, a little late I guess but my weekends are Monday and Tuesday so I hope you can forgive me.

First are some persimmon handles I made for some new (to me) chisels:

This is a shot for Ken of my headstock binding bending jig. It is just some thin walled brass pipe in a piece of mahogany with the ends flared so it doesn't come out. The little torch heats it up really really fast and at .06 or less you can bend most woods right around the tiny pipe. Here is a photo:

All of the binding and purfling on my headstocks are done on this little guy, even the end ones that are tighter even than the 1/2" pipe. It heats it up so fast you can push it a little further and let it set there, it is pretty easy. Here is one of my heads:

I also have a couple of guitars going. One curly mahogany small guitar and a larger guitar in colorful EIR and Sonic Sitka. They are moving along pretty well.
