The old classical builders were often poor and used whatever they had. Sometimes they used unmatched tops, tops of more than 2 pieces, etc. if they had wood on hand, they used wood for the strips.

I can't say I've ever seen an old classical guitar with wood fillets on the sides, or tapes, for that matter. Strad used linen strips to reinforce the sides of 'cellos, and to line the sides of his inlaid fiddles, though, so it's an old technique.

Has anyone tried cutting their strips from silk? Silk is super strong , and glues well.

last year acoustic guitar magazine (cant remember which one, its at my flat atm) had an article about restoring a pre-war d-18. the bas rib was cracked along the grain from neck block to tail block, a picture from the inside showed that every tape reinforcement had failed, simply cracking with the grain as if they were made from honeycomb.

of course, i dont know what kind of trauma this guitar had suffered, but the tape didn't seem to do much to stop the crack and were not doing anything to keep the side together.... would be interesting to see some comparisons of tape vs braces vs wooden strips (like taylor uses).

food for thought i suppose.

As I found in my tests, if the tapes are properly glued to the sides they _have_ to break if the side does. The point is, again from my measurements, that it takes a lot more force to do it. Looking at the guitar after the fact amounts to anecdotal evidence: there is no way to know what it took to do that damage. That's why I did the tests and got the data.
