What about a FAQ section for newbs like myself to go through. Also might want to include all of the how do I build radius board, side bender, sticker wood, etc. The search function does not always get me the info I am looking for and I hate asking questions I know have been asked on a regular basis.

Hi Hesh! I would love to see someone cover the proper detailed procedure for fitting a dovetail neck joint before I move on to bolt on necks.

I too would like to see something on the different types of tops/tonewoods-starting thicknesses and temperatures for bending. As a newbeeee I have a great deal of anxiety around bending times and temperatures. Maybe I'm over thinking it? I just bought my 1st silcone blanket and spring slats from John/Blues Creek and I'm about ready to bend a walnut set. gaah

This should be first on the list! Something we seldom think of, often times when it's too late. This kind of info should be a sticky in every subforum on this board, IMHO.

I'd love, love, love to see a neck made from start to finish. Specifically . . .

1) Mounting the fretboard so the frets are perfectly horizontal
2) Creating the mortis or dovetail
3) Creating the female end in the neckblock for the mortis or dovetail
4) Mounting the hardware for a bolt-on so everything is square and aligned

5) Close ups of those little sanding blocks John uses in his dovetail videos :D

One thing that has me wondering are the topics of bridge patch selection and bridge selection. It seems that every time the subject comes up there are not very many of the big guys, the experts, that are willing to share much.
I am beginning to think that these two pieces are very important. What material and what size for what kind of tonal response at the bridge patch? Some people talk about the weight and material for the bridge what are the expected results of specific choices? All of the energy from the strings travels through these two pieces so I would expect major effects from changing the characteristics of these pieces. I think exploring this topic would be very helpful for a lot of people. Thanks for listening, Mikey

Something I really want to learn about and start incorporating into my builds is deflection testing of tops. I understand the concept but I can't seem to find a discussion on numbers. I wouldn't know where to begin without some parameters and discussion of why.

Something I am extremely interested in are the fine details and various methods available for doing a double mortise and tenon neck joint. It seems to me (on a purely theoretical level) that it might be a possibility to construct things in such a fashion as to create a situation where when the fret board extension was attached through the top that the top is 'pulled into place' thereby creating perfectly flat run.

While I have seen/viewed tutorials on the subject it appears to my eyes that some specific details are usually lacking. Sure, it seems like a fairly straight forward process but I'd love to see a full blown discussion with arguments among builders as to the 'best' methodology.

This may have been mentioned, I am just popping in here for a sec but I really like the way people document their entire build on luthiercom.org. I see things sometimes in there that people don't always highlight in a show and tell thread that I think are valuable. Seeing the whole process is pretty informative. I'm not sure if it would fly here, it makes the character of that other forum very nice, and different than this one. And different is good. I do enjoy those though.

It is nice, but I think you need a separate forum for the build threads, if you are going to do it. I think there is a disadvantage to having too many forum sections, but, build threads are, most likely, not for everyone. One of the good things about OLF is that most discussion takes place in one thread. However, successful electric forum and kit forum, seem to be working. Don't know if a build forum would work here or not. Or, do we just let folks go over to Luthiercom to see build threads if they want to, there is no lack of them over there - couple of hundred, maybe.

I posted most of my first build here, in sections, but no one else seemed to be doing it, so I didn't continue. Don't know if it was "seen one, seen 'em all", or just not what this place is all about. Plenty of folks post sections of builds, from time to time, just not whole build threads. Also, pictures are hosted here, and build threads have a lot of pictures. Drives up the space. Not an issue at Luthiercom, as they don't host pictures. You could do the same here, but the archives would suffer, so there are trade offs.
