I'm sorry but for 250 bucks I like to get a receipt (and I finally did). [:Y:]

Well you are still doing better than I am Haans. I do have the PayPal receipt, but that's the only acknowledgment I have of the transaction.

I'm sure most of you feel like me jaded, Ervins lets us down a little in his optomistic view on delivery and taken money a little early in my opinion, but give the guy a break it's his first time doing this and he relies on others as well who've given him optomistic dates I guess. I think when this batch is sold and he has to reprint he'll have a more realistic estimate.

I'm holding off from bracing a top and back until I've read them and I'm feeling as frustrated too.

I'd say more disapointed then jaded, that's a bit too strong for me considering stuff was out of his control with the publisher and printers. I'm really glad they aren't being sent out from Canada. :P
I've been taking my time with a top also. But now I'll probably get my tone generator setup together and tune this top using the Chladni pattern And Alan Carruth's method and read the book and use the info I get from it on the next top. I can't wait any longer I have to have it done for Hearldsburg! :P
Just joking but I would like to have it for our Florida Guitar Builders Association meeting on the 22nd.

The way I look at it is this is only a few weeks out of the 40 years it took him to gather together the content in the book.

And the professor is late to the class that I really wanted to take.

I can understand everyone's frustration, but give Ervin a break. You know it is going to be a fantastic book. Ervin wouldn't have done it if it wasn't going to be first class. He's not going to rip anyone off. Sounds like Ervin is going to great lengths to get custom shipping boxes. That can be expensive and take some time. Its a first run. I'm sure that everything will be fine after the festival this weekend. A friend of mine is currently writting a review of it for ASIA and he tells me it is a great book.

Al's video and Ervin's book are not going to launch you into the realm of Luthier God. It is going to take time and empirical application before you understand and learn how to apply this great info in your own work. In fact you might be disappointed after you apply the info. That is because you need to build a bunch of guitars to learn how it works for you. It's not like you are only going to make one guitar. Keep building and don't let the wait for Ervin's book or Al's dvd slow you down. These dvds and books are tools to help you apply the info for you to become the best you.

I'm usually a very impatient person when it comes to things ordered and awaiting delivery...

In this case I really don't have any issues with the setch...its not like we ordered something that was supposed to be in stock...if that were the case I'd be flaming mad

But its not...about the only thing that could be construed as annoying is that Ervin has obviously decided to give the Healdsburg Festival priority....ummm...would anyone else do anything different?

I'd much rather wait a bit (yeah, I'm as anxious as anybody else) and get a nice signature than get something hurried....

trust me, its not in my nature to be too forgiving about situations like this...if it were a piece of wood that was ordered and I felt the supplier was lagging or ripping me off I'd have his/her head on a platter by now...

I'm cool, not expecting any thing till into September. Mr. Murphy lurks around every corner. In the working world giving estimates on dates usually come back to bite you, although it's almost impossible to get by without doing so.Time guesstimates usually get carved in stone by the receiver.Get it here by September in good condition and I'm a happy camper.

This is usually the case with self-published books. I've been studying for my CSCS certificate, and one of the books I ordered in April arrived two weeks ago due because of printing delays. They're out of the author's control and the only way a self-publisher can really give you accurate timelines is by having done it a few times before.

Did anyone pick up their books at Healdsburg? Has anyone received a shipped copy?

I picked up my set at Healedsburg. Yaaay - happy to report that they actually DO exist!! I haven't had the time yet to go through them entirely yet but I can say that I was first taken aback with how high quality the books themselves are. They''re beautiful. Glancing through them, I can say that there's info. in there that will lend these books to reading and re-reading for years to come. I suspect that as thought provoking as a lot of information is in there that we will be seeing some interesting threads coming up soon. I couldn't find anything that was, "here's the size of my braces on an OM" but there's a lot of information on the physics and engineering of sound propagation and how it applies to the sound box of a guitar and the particular type of sound you may be going for. Great stuff. I can tell he wants people to think about it, not to just use recipies.
His workshop at the festival was awesome. They were taping it and it is supposed to come out as a dvd with references to sections in the book as well. I heard mention of $60 or so when it comes out. Sure got me thinking.

I picked up my set at Healdsburg as well. I can tell you that they are quite amazing. As Brock noted, you have to be prepared for the delivery to be in the style of Ervin. He's an unusual guy, and doesn't necessarily do everything 'by the book' (pun intended).

Some of the information in the two books is redundant, and some of it is re-prints from magazines and such. Also a few of the pictures are going to be familiar to you (i.e. the picture of him pulling on a set of guitar strings with the guitar held out like a bow and arrow), etc... I have no idea how much of it is original, first time in print stuff, but in the small bits and pieces I've had a chance to read since driving back from H'burg, I've been impressed... or perhaps it would be better to say... I'm not unhappy with the purchase.. which is saying something, considering the cost.

If you aren't familiar with any of his previous publishings, it will all be new to you for sure.

Chris,
You should make a video of yourself waiting for the package. In the style of Warhol would be cool.

Yeah, Chris, we all want to see that video of you biting your nails, rocking in your straight chair, looking out the window for the Mail person! :D
