You can not base the additional stiffness of a brace based only on it's width. Height is very important. In fact height adds more addition stiffness (section modulus) than width does. a taller 1/4" brace is likely to be stronger than a shorter 3/8" thick brace in the vertical cross section modulus

In other words within a given range you gain more section modulus strength by increasing the height by “X” that increasing the width by the same “x” value
