Are you originally from OK?

Looks great, and congrats on the new shop! Definitely looks like a good find.

Was the 75% layoff including the whole of Mathews Inc, bow shop and all? I guess I'm not surprised things took a downturn, but certainly wasn't expecting that extreme.

John, excited for you! The home looks great! I'm not too far away in NW Ark.

I didn't know you worked for Matthews.......nice bows. Sorry about the cutbacks, it's happening a lot.

Congrats John! [:Y:] Are you in Sparta?

Nope back in Oklahoma. McPherson Laid off a bunch of guys (about 75% of everyone), myself included.

Dang! Hate to hear that, but it must just mean that you're meant to craft your own terrific guitars as opposed to making McPherson richer! [:Y:] If we ever get OKC back on the schedule can I still visit? Hope all's well with you and yours!

Hey, just a thought...maybe the next Mayes DVD could be about removing and disposing of carpet! :D

john,
i agree with tracy - bad news, and good news. congratulations on finding the right place. only thing needed on the outside is a nice little "mayes guitar" sign.
can you tell us more about the mcpherson lay off? i know there's been some talk around the olf about the tough economic times for luthiers. when people need to stretch their bucks the first thing to go is the extras - like hand built guitars. is that the basic explanation behind a small company like mcpherson laying off 3/4 of it's staff? or is it more complicated than that?
if it is that basic, do you know if it's also affecting other smaller companies like santa cruz and collings?
phil

ps. wishing you and your family happiness and stability as you set down roots.

Collings had to let go 10 of their employees in January.

Looks nice, John. So I guess the 15 house wirlwind tour day paid off? :D

indeed! Not too bad for 120K.....

You're trying to hurt me, right? For 120k, I could buy a closet here in LA. [headinwall]

Congrats on the house. It should be a lot of fun building in that shop. [:Y:]

Golly, I must be in the "low rent" area of California. Here in Auburn we could get "the garage" for $120K! Without the improvements! wow7-eyes

That's a REALLY nice looking spread, John. [:Y:]

yeah Oklahoma housing is crazy cheap. You can, literally, buy a INSANE house for well under 400K One more good reason to move back here.

I didn't work for Mathews. I worked for McPherson Guitars. I have no idea if the bow co. laid any off. I don't think they did though. It was just the guitar co. that got hit with layoffs. You can't build 500 guitars and only sell 200 of them and keep on going! They had been on the loosing end for many years now. I hope it improves for them though I won't be surprised if they don't make it.

Here is a picture of the dreaded blue carpet. The lady only has two chairs...weird, but she was moving out...

Image

Here is about half the shop. Filled with the womans boxes of her stuff... I'm going to pull up the carpet, and epoxy the concrete underneath.

And a picture of the kitchen....

Inspections on tuesday....then one March 10th we close if all goes well.
