Sooooo...back to my original question if I may.

Does anyone have an opinion as to how I should prepare the neck surface (now Danish Ol) prior to finishing with Poly? I'm concerned about compatibility since I assume that the DO has penetrated deeper than any surface sanding would remove.

If me I would sand back just to the wood and prepwith 220p and seal with 1# cut of shellac this should present an ideal preped and sealed surface for poly

You can pad on KTM9 but you can not French polish KTM9. KTM 9 will not melt and amalgamate in to a continuous film. You can only pad layer over layer. Padding layer over layer is not French polishing. French polishing required a media that can be solvent melted over and over and over.

So you are padding on KTM9 not French polishing KTM9

I don’t’ mean to sound huffy but there is a world of difference. you can pad on or hand rub most any media. but you are always putting one layer over a setup layer. In French polishing you amalgamate the shellac into one continuous film not layers of film.

Whatever--it works great.

Padding is fine application method. Nothing wrong with it at all, but I did not want anyone to confuse padding waterborne acrylic lacquer to French polishing. They are two totally different application process and types of final film. You may find it to be hair splitting but it is important to those that may not know the characteristics of different finish media and applications, and we have to look out for them. Faulty info can cause people problems. I hope you understand I am not trying to pick on you. I’m just avoiding confusion and I hope you can see how description of finish application is relevant.

Best to you, glad to have you with us here at the OLF[:Y:]

Most finishes will stick well to shellac, but I can't speak for all the newer catalyzed finishes. If it was my guitar, I would spray shellac over the Danish oil, and then the cat poly-whatever. I would probably spray a coat over the body also to seal any contaminates that may be there. I have used cat polyurethane over shellac, no problem. If you are sending it out to one of the pros, they will know what works with their product. They may want to use a sealer wash coat supplied by their brand of finish to be safe.
