JJ Donahue and his brother popped in the shop. JJ was from Shamokin PA and was in for a Class reunion. It is nice to see old friends . JJ and I go back a ways. He showed off a beauty Coco guitar with some interesting contemporary design. It was a beauty and sounded very nice. His work is impeccable .

I bent 2 sets of sides, one of them a cutaway, jointed 2 backs, and completed the rim for the 12 fret 000 and pre bent the reverse kerf lining for it. I sanded the Bubinga for the OM wedge and installed some more lighting in my shop. All this while entertaining the grand daughter. The humidity is still a little high in the shop for bracing, I usually build a little later into the fall, I hate the time between heating and cooling seasons as the humidity rises. I guess one of these days I need to get a dehumidifier if I want to build at this time of year.

All in all a productive weekend though weekends are somewhat meaningless after retirement.

Got my guitar storage problem solved with some new shelving and recycled throw rugs - a win/wiin since my wife wanted to replace them anyway. She also came down and helped me build the shelves

The shop is still a mess. After finishing #1 I realized there are lots of things I don't need in the shop ( I keep the home improvement stuff in the garage) and some reorganization would be a good idea. Probably be another week or two before I can start #2 and 3.

Had our electrician over to start hooking up my spray booth and explosion proof light fixture. Big $$$ there...
Made the rosettes for two new builds, a compression Engelmann/coco 6 string in the Larson style and a compression Eng/Honduras long scale 12 string. Here's the rosettes and the start of bracing the 12.

I think those books are in the wrong shop....

I attended Tom Thiel's annual Autumn tonewood festival in New Hampshire and had a blast. He gave a presentation of a figured mahogany log that they processed (800+ bf of perfectly quartersawn TIGHT fiddleback beautiful mahogany) and then we went out to the barn and there it was. It was amazing. He also had some redwood salvaged from 150+ year old tressle bridges. It was amazing too! The gang at the Homestead woodworking school had some delicious chili for us to eat and we got to check out a ton of wood. I snagged a really nice and light red spruce top, some bracewood, and a bunch of really nice old BRW. It was great to see everybody too. If any of you don't know about Tom, his website is www.northwindtimber.com. He is a very nice and very knowledgeable guy.

My great day made the news that the Red Sox blew it a little easier to bear. I hope the Angels demolish the Yankees.

Like Tony, I celebrated Thanksgiving in the great soon-to-be-white north. We drove up to spend the weekend with my wife's family.

Filippo, the rosettes are done Larson style. The inside ring at the opening is half ivoroid/half spruce. I like it as it protects the spruce, binds the edge, and still lets you see that it's spruce. It also gives you a visual indication of how close you are to sanding through your rosette if you have ever experienced that misery...

Trimmed my sides to fit in the mold, shaped the neck and tail blocks, decided to wrap about 100 clothes pins with rubber bands, thought I might as well glue in the blocks and top kerfing. While I was at it, I tried out my radius dish and rods and braced my top. I was on a roll, so I just had to shape the braces and notch the rim for the brace ends. I got the top glued on last night and baby does it ring like a drum!!!

It is funny how much more confident and efficient I am now that I have the right tools and some sense of what I am doing.

Next weekend: get the back braced and attached so that I can start binding and finishing.

I finished building a side-bending machine - a lot of it done with major help from my excellent friend Peter J. After bending a couple orphan/practice sides I'll take on a gorgeous set of Tazzie Blackwood. Hope I don't screw it up !

French Polished the soundboard of one guitar. Man! The difference it made! It increased the sustain and the musical tonality of the guitar in a way I never imagined. Don't think I'm sold on FP for the whole guitar but the on soundboard, it was a major plus.

One does not simply, own enough guitars!

Took my wife and kids to three out door cider farms for pumpkin picking on saturday, got some fresh beats (YUM!) and cabbage, had some cider, fresh donuts and a great time!

Sunday was church, and I watched my Lions punch Pittsburg in the mouth and still loose
Ah well, they are starting to look competitive and thats a nice change. Mowed the lawn and got some shop time.

Perfect weekend.

Got my OM neck sanded and stained - nothing like some stain to help reveal quickly some areas where glue got left behind... its like those red tablets they use to give you so you could see where you missed brushing your teeth... YUK!

got my 2 Martins set up just right with new strings, relief checked, action lowered at the nut and saddle and a little touch-up on the crowns... perfect way to spend a rainy Friday birthday

Dragged my #2 out of the case, dressed in my best Renaissance costume, and spent the weekend performing with my guitar ensemble, The Rosewood Guild, at the Carolina Renaissance Festival. I'll be there for the next 6 weekends. To Heck with the yard!

Sound Clips of most of my guitars

Put some final touches on the structural bits for a 'Balalaika' (spelling?) that is necked and strung for 4 string fretless bass...calling it a 'Kinda-Laika'. Still needs some esthetics and finish work, just giving it some time with the strings on and at tension first.

When on a 4x4 run with some friends around Mt Hood (Oregon, USA) and found a great 'log' with burls all over it...then spent yesterday banging my head against a wall trying to figure out a good resaw sled for this weird shaped monster.

I just cut a beautiful maple tree down and bucked it for milling that was totally flamed from top to bottom.It had just died and i wanted to get it before the bugs did.I do think some of it has been dead for awhile as some looks spalted.I will mill it tomorrow and mabey take pics to post.

Thanksgiving weekend, so family stuff, and preparing the yard for winter.

I don't get to work on guitars on weekends, I have to steal time from work. I got these bridges made this week.

Went to the Tonewood festival thet Tom Thiel put on and spent way more than I planned.
I did get 11 sets of Adi though...

I would highly recommend changing the neck joint on the SG ... they were never built that way originally, but what you want is a full neck width tenon into the body .. make it as far into the body as the neck PU route will be , and deep enough to have it go underneath the route for the PU itself (ie dont route away the tenon)

Put another coat of varnish on the Oakie's body
Kept working on shaping and finish sanding out the Oakie's Oak neck (Yes... an Oak neck... but unless this one turns out absolutely spectacular sounding, I won't be doing another Oak neck... The ring porous nature of Oak makes it far too easy to sand Flat Spots!)

Then, spent quite a bit of time pondering how we are going to fit a 69" refridgerator into the 68" hole in the new house. Luckily... the wife measured the hole wrong and it is actually 71 1/2" (Luckily meaning we don't have to move cabinets 3" higher...) The fridge will go in no problem.
