So I was dry sanding my finish to knock down some dust nibs then I wiped the sanding dust off with a paper towel damp with mineral spirits. The finish seemed to get a little soft so I hung it up and let it dry off when I read the can duh . It said not to use mineral spirits to clean. So did I screw it up or will it probably be fine if I just let it sit for a while before I proceed with the rest of my coats. I don't think I have the mental strength to do it over again as this is the second finish this guitar has received.

Hi Jason

I use mineral spirits on dry EM600 all the time when I am final sanding. I think it should be fine.

You might want to post your question on the Target forum. People there may have a better answer for you.

Here's the link:

Thanks Neil. I have the same question posed to the Target forum. I'm just worried about adhesion issues with my subsequent coats. Also, I thought about shooting a coat of shellac just in case.

Jason,

I have started wiping my projects down with a 50/50 mixture of denatured alcohol and water between coats. This does soften the finish a bit and helps with burn-in of the subsequent coats. I don't think you will have any issues as long as the solvent has fully flashed off before you re-shoot.

Ken

I also do this and have experienced no problems. I do not wet sand until the finish has cured for at least 5 days. I wipe down between coats with a rag dampened with distilled water.
