I'm finishing one right now.
Workability? Like a dream. 'Twas nothing to bend it.
It sands quite easily...in fact you have to take care with it not going too far. Sound? Like the best cardboard you've ever heard!

cardboard? I have 3 sets from BobC that are in the woodpile....I hope mine sound like the nicest plywood around when I build them

I built an OM with Ancient Kauri last year, was VERY pleased with the result. My pieces built a guitar with amazing sustain, rang as long as a bronze church bell. I know Brock (maybe Lance ?!?!?) is doing one right now, ask him what he thinks......

Hmm, where did you get it and how did it tap before putting it together? I also got a set from RC's current batch, and it's just about the floppiest cardboardest wood I've yet to tap. It also has a crack in one half of the back, so I'm tempted to return it. It sure it purty though, and the crack only goes about 1/2" into the pattern and shouldn't hurt anything once glued, and it's for a jumbo so an overly lively back might not be the best thing anyway.

I've never used it but it sure does look incredible under bright stage lighting. I was less impressed with the sound but it could have just been the guitars I heard - maybe it wasn't the woods fault.

The wood I used was purchased in New Zealand while on vacation. I paid $25 for the board and paid $125 to get it shipped home (didn't want to schlep it through the airports). My piece was big enough to get 3 sets out of and was very plain (no pretty figure) however, it was perfectly quartersawn. It also felt like it was about two thirds petrified and gave off random sparks when being cut up. I have the sellers address if you want some more.....

Also, this wood responds well to sanding to a very fine finish. When I hit the 2000 grit level the wood just came alive visually. Try it on a scrap, you will be pleasently surprised.
The guy I bought my board from was fairly confident that the tree it was cut from was about 35,000 years old!
