I thought that I had all my bases covered to prevent mishaps with CA glue, after reading mishaps here on the forum. I came up with a new one. Yesterday evening I wanted to run back out to the shop real quick to glue the other side of a seam with CA. I grabbed my flip flops at the door and headed out to glued the seam while dinner was on the stove. Everything went well until I turned to walk out of the shop and my foot was glued to my flip flop. [headinwall] laughing6-hehe Funny, but also not so funny. I had to very carefully slice my shoe away from my foot. I now have a thin layer of flip flop sole on the bottom of a couple of toes. Amazing what just a drip or two can do! Wendy

I used to try to hold my binding in place with one hand and drizzle CA with the other (notice I said "used to"). I always had the solvent handy just in case. But it's difficult to reach the solvent when one finger of each hand gets glued to the guitar.

Guess we're lucky though. I heard of one guy who managed to glue his eyelid shut.

I felt most sorry for the guy who spilled half an ounce on his stool & then sat down!
The worst one I did was to glue my thumb & forefinger together (very securely) around the spar of a three metre R/C glider wing. Pretty tough to do anything with three metres of fragile wing attached.

On the other hand, gluing a coworkers coffee cup to the work shelves is very funny without being dumb or all the personal embarrassment!

The worst that I did was get some on my index finger, tried to wipe it off with a paper towel.
Quick puff of smoke from the towel and it burned about a 32nd of an inch into the finger. Big ole red hole for almost a week.
Boy did that hurt working over the heat of the fryolators for the next week.
Now I just let it harden and pick it off later.

Not sure I understand. Why did the paper towel burn?

CA creates heat when it goes off. The process is accelerated when CA comes into contact with certain materials, having to do with PH, if I recall.

OUCH, that's a horrible thought! I don't think I'll ever use CA again without closed shoes on.

That is funny! Glad it worked out for you.

Once I was gluing some window shutter lever caps with thin CA and wasn't wearing any glasses. When I snapped one of the end pieces on, a drop squirted into my eye! When I blinked, my eye lid was glued shut. So very quickly pried it open, and kept my eye open while I washed it out. It did no damage, but it burned really bad for about 2 hours. After doing research, found out it won't damage an eye, but it will really hurt! The sad part is that I'm so careful(always wear eye protection) when working on guitars with CA, but just didn't think about wearing glasses while using it for other uses. Oh well, another lesson learned!

I was gluing in a rosette and accidentally touched it with my finger and then pulled half the rosette out.I had to re rout the channel and piece things back together.
Bummer,
James

I've used a sharp chisel more than once to separate my fingers from one part of a guitar or another. History repeats itself it seems even after all those lessons learned sessions :D

Some of you have some funny stories. I found it hard to believe paper towels could catch on fire, so of course, I tried it. Did not catch on fire because I freaked out when it started to smoke and I doused it with water. We are more likely to see this than the casual super glue user given the amounts we tend to have in the shop, and the myriad number of uses. Yes, ph affects cure time! If I recall, lower ph (bases, soaps, etc) rapidly increase cure time and thus heat output.

I was wearing some cheap latex gloves when binding my first. I guess the latex didn't like the CA and kind of melted to my finger. I had latex stuck to me for a couple of days. laughing6-hehe

get some cutex fingernail polish remover and keep that handy . It will melt off the CA . Don't ask me how I know . I glued my shoe to the floor one day but the best CA story was a friend , that will remain nameless squeezed the bottle to clear the pipette on the end . Noe noticing that it shot across the bench and into his coffee cup.
When he took a sip , the CA glued the cup to his lip and his tongue to his teeth . See it is funnier when it happens to other people .

The wife asked me to glue a bobby pin to this bow thing she had. Wanted to put it in her hair. Well, I flooded the bow with CA, stuck the pin on there, hit it with accelerator....and promptly threw it in the sink as it hissed and smoked. Pretty scary moment. In the end the glue held and I made points with the wife, but I'll pay more attention as I use CA from now on. NO idea it had that much heat to a reaction.

Very similar story here. I was gluing in side dot markers. I would put a drop of CA in the cavity and just press in the dot. Well.... let's just say that now, I press in the dot before adding the CA... I didn't glue my eye shut, but it did scare the living daylights out of me. Leson learned!

One should never, ever drink coffee! One more reason.

Speaking of model airplanes, I glued my hand inside the fuselage of .60 sized plane once. Had my arm in up to my elbow and was wicking CA in around the sheeting. Didn't realize the CA was working its way through the seams and around my fingers and hand until I tried to remove my hand.

I too have seen the smoke and and felt the burn from CA on a paper towel.

Ken
