Lots of people use that kind of bender as it is simple and cheap to build, and since you need to build a bending form with any method. The clamping methods are quite diverse, some use turn buckles some clamps and except for the waist springs will work well.
Here is a video of a similar idea with a cutaway bender added, he uses clamps for waist.

the one thing I would ask is to not use light bulbs. I know of 3 people that lost their shops from light bulb benders. They can cause a fire. Heat blankets are so much safer. Just food for thought. I want you to be safe.

I did google it, thats how I found it. I found a sire that showed 1 page out of 4 of the plans. I was just hoping someone had built one and had a copy of the full plan.

John I agree. I think it would be almost like putting a piece of wood in the oven. Might get away with it 10 times but the 11th will burn like crazy.

Fred, thanks for that video. Are you saying NOT to use springs for the waste?

Is there a better way to build it or are they all basically the same when it comes to home built?

I started out buiding a very simple bender for my early guitars, but found it did the job perefctly well, and something like 80 sides bent since have never had a breakage or felt I wanted anything different. I make a new one (takes all of an hour) for each new body shape, but then you have to do that with a Fox style one as well. I use a blanket and slats from John Hall.

And if you do use light bulbs...or even blankets, set up a timer for when you forget.

I use both bulbs AND blanket. I NEVER leave the bender during the time the heat sources are on. I even set an alarm on my cell phone...just in case.

I use a heating blanket because it works better. When I used light bulbs, however, I found that lining the inside of the bender and the mold with aluminum tape was essential. Once I did that, there was no scorching at all.
