With the gold blankets falling all over everything. The music fascinated me. Thank goodness for the Internet! How can I be in the middle of all of this and never heard of Nick Drake?

That song is beautiful and I have a funny feeling I will be learning some of his stuff...

The great ones die too young... :(

Pink Moon is probably my favorite: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aXnfhnCoOyo

The Thoughts of Mary Jane is a good one too.

I thought it was Nick Drake. I still have not found the actual name of the song, although I think it is off the album "From the Morning".

Beautiful fingerstyle music.

Gonna be ordering some of that.

Another one that fascinated me was the music behind many of the Home Depot commercials. Fingerstyle guitar with lots of harmonics. I tried finding that one and was surprized to find many others doing the same. Can't remember how it turned out other than it was produced exclusively for Home Depot.

I assume you meant the Nokia commercial. It sounds like Edward James Olmos to me. I could be wrong, though.

Actually, the song is called "From The Morning" and is the last track on his final album, Pink Moon. He only made 3 albums, although there have been numerous compilations since he died. I'd recommend any of the 3 albums he made (Five Leaves Left, Bryter Layter, and Pink Moon).

OK, I see that now... thanks!

From the Morning

A day once dawned, and it was beautiful
A day once dawned from the ground
Then the night she fell
And the air was beautiful
The night she fell all around.

So look see the days
The endless coloured ways
And go play the game that you learnt
From the morning.

And now we rise
And we are everywhere
And now we rise from the ground
And see she flies
And she is everywhere
See she flies all around

So look see the sights
The endless summer nights
And go play the game that you learnt
From the morning.

I wonder if Christo got anything out of that commercial? I noticed that after it was on the air for a couple of weeks, they added a disclaimer saying that Christo and Jeanne Claude were not involved.

I've been a big Nick Drake fan but only heard of him about 5 years ago. He was a pretty much unknown entity and died way too soon in his 20s. I think he started to gain popularity posthumously after this Volkswagon ad ran on TV a few years back http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8lSKUL_n6c0. Unfortunately he never documented any of his songs in writing and after he died fans had to laboriously figure his music out note-by-note by ear. To add to the challenge he apparently used many different alternate tunings. One of his songs which I have always been intrigued by for its simplicity yet peculiar meter is Horn on the Pink Moon album. If you have a chance listen to the two parts he plays simultaneously, each in a different time signature. It is hauntingly simple yet the two parts intertwine with layered complexity. Much of his music has a dark tone to it but very beautiful none-the-less.

I wish I was a better guitar player - I'd have a number of his songs in my playlist!

Cheers
Rick

Brock, it is MOST def him singing in the commercial. I have been having fun all night with that tuning (if you dare, CGCFCF). Hit some harmonics on that and see if you do not cause some hairs to rise up on your neck. I can't wait to tune my harp guitar for this...
