Before scraping

Using my handydandy scraper



Things I learned:
* Wait until AFTER rosette and sound hole to sand and cut out top oversize - this will avoid the caul problem mentioned later
* My drill press works pretty well for this - I just worked on it on my oversize table and didn't move it back and forth
* I like my little scraper - it worked better than my standard scrapers because I had more control
* Watch the cauls that I used to hold the top - I got little indentations where the front caul was clamped Thankfully it sanded out with little problem.

Yeah....I probably broke a few rules, but I got the job done.

I picked it up at a woodworking show in the Seattle area. It's part of a set of 4 mini-planes.

Arnie that looks real good. Always nice to get a major step done on #1.

Never mind - I found some at LMI that should match pretty well. I'm not sure if I want to tackle the extra step though.

One thing I forgot to mention.....that LMI Instrument makers white glue (I guess it's supposed to be at least as good as Titebond) really was quick drying. Since I've got a woodworking background, I knew to work fast on the glue-up, but it seemed incredibly fast, at least to me.

Just an observation....is this what to expect?

I like the combination, would look good even with a simple binding.

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

I agree about LMI white setting up pretty fast. I like LMI white but if I need a little more time I use Tite bond.

You did a right nice job for the first one Arnie. I love the fast tack of LMI white, but as Mr. Boone stated, use titebond if you need more time. If (when) you dent your top again, steam out the dent before you sand it out.

Thanks Steve. It wasn't a large dent....just noticeable. However, your tip is timely, because there might be another dent on this soon-to-be-abused top where I need to bring out the big guns.
