With very exceptions you will find that most digital chromatic tuners have a +/- 4 cent tolerance. That means you could be out as much as 4c sharp or flat but the tuner read as on pitch. Plus with the iphone you are depending on its sound card and microphone. So my opinion is to invest in a good swing arm (analog) chromatic or one of Petersons strobe tuners or PC based strobe software tuners.

Thanks Michael. In your opinion, what would be an acceptable margin of tolerance for a tuner? Is it unreasonable to expect 0 tolerance or does the stretching of strings and variance between strings etc... render this impossible?
