Hey everyone

This spring Robbie O'Brien and Red Rock Community College again is gracious enough to allow me to present a seminar on my method of French polishing. Last May we did a 2 day class and had to go over every thing in a fairly quick manner to cover it all. This year we will have 4 days, 4 hours each day to cover my method.

This years presentation will be broke down like this

Day one
Media materials, preparation and how the muneca works

Day two
Bodying (the art of waxing)
Spiriting-Off during bodying (the key to a level build)

Day three
Glazing (making it shine)

Day four
Glazing continued and course review


Dates are May13th - May 16th
13th Thurs- 5-9PM
14th Fri- 5-9PM
15th Sat - either 8:30AM-12:30 or 5-9PM or even 4:00 - 8:00 Robbie will an open house form 1pm -4pm on Sat the 15th and all the FP students are invited to attend the open house.
16th Sun 9-1PM this early class on Sunday is to allow for folks to make flight connections later in the day.

The costs of the class this year will be $300 per attendee and I will provide a list of materials needed for the course tomorrow on this link. You will also be able to find this info on Red Rock Community Colleges’ web site as soon as Robbie has the chance to get posted there. http://www.rrcc.edu

This is a true art form on it's own. I first learned how to do French Polish in 1977 early in my career as a furniture craftsmen and finish repair touch up person. It would be great to take a refresher course as it's been years since I've done it. Just to get back in touch with the skill. Having spent two years in a hot lacquer booth before that, French Polish was a joy.

here is the list of supplies you need to bring to the class.


The supplies needed:
There are many acceptable substitutes for some of the supplies. However I will only mention the ones I personally would use.

1oz of 1 lb cut of shellac and 2 oz of 2 lb cut of shellac (100% wax free shellac) in plastic bottels

2-4 oz of Pure Grain alcohol or Denatured Alcohol

4 or 6 oz of 100% pure Walnut oil or Extra Virgin Olive oil

several 4” x 4” well worn non-dyed Muslin or linen squares (Outer muneca or outer pad) or your choice of outer muneca pad material

A couple feet of non-dyed 100% wool roving. (Inner muneca or pad) or your choice of inner muneca material

Three eye dropper bottle with eye dropper (one for 2# shellac, one for 2# shellac and one for the lube oil. used t store shellac and oil for loading the muneca)

Available supply of 8.5 x 11 printer paper

A lint free work pad like a well worn folded linen sheet

Several pair of nitril gloves.

A work piece: this can be anything you wish as long as it is not over 12" x 24" We need to make room for all attendees to be able to work

Last but not least; A good bit of patients and determination.

I was lucky enough to take the two day class last year. It's awesome. Michael is a good teacher and I learned a lot. I don't know if I'll be able to make it work this year (end of the school year is swamped), but if I can, I'll be back to take it again. You won't regret it.

For those that don't live in the Denver area, how would anyone get all those fluids to Denver? I cant see them letting anyone on a plane with grain alcohol and shellac...
