Hello all,

Is there a need to use pore filler ie z-poxy for spruce tops/cedar tops? Is shellac enough prior to finishing? Also, Bocote seems like a wood w/ little or no open pore structure, so is it necessary to fill, or will the shellac and finish take care of it?

Many thanks for the replies,

Dave

Spruce and Cedar are closed-grained woods and don't need to be filled.

It's been 25 years since I've worked with Bocote but I seems to rememeber
that it was an open-grained wood in need of filling. But my memory has fooled
me more than once - as far as I can remember.

Spruce shouldn't require filler. I've never used Bocote, but you should be able to tell if it needs filling by the way it looks with wet shellac on it.

You need to pore fill bocote - its pore quotient is about the same as walnut or mahogany.
