Man, I thought my back and top joining technique was getting pretty good..... I'd joined a couple of tops using my shooting board easily - and passing the candle test....yay.

Then.... I turned to an Osage Orange back that I'm working on, to build a Sitka/Osage OOO.

wow7-eyes not only is this stuff hard (good), but it's got some evil splinters. I finally got it joined, but not without some pain and suffering.

Anyone have the same experience with Osage Orange?

Oh, yeh.

Not too bad, though when I recall a 3" long fir splinter on an old railing that effectively pinned my middle and third fingers together this past summer.

I pulled some 1/2" Purpleheart splinters out of my fingers earlier this week... I was hand-planing out a shim to fit on top of a trussrod...

Luckily Purpleheart wood is pretty hard and tough stuff... so those splinters pulled back out without breaking off. Spruce and Cedar splinters are much softer and aren't so easy.

Thanks

John
